Xtralis VESDA VLS aspirating smoke detectors to protect Abu Dhabi International Airport

Xtralis’ VESDA VLS aspirating smoke detectors will provide fire prevention at the new Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building (MTB), which is scheduled to open next year. The MTB will be the largest in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and one of the region’s most architecturally impressive structures.

Xtralis’ VESDA and VESDA-E aspirating smoke detectors (ASDs) now protect many of the United Arab Emirates’ super structures, including the Burj Khalifa, the Emirates Palace Hotel and both Dubai and Abu Dhabi International Airports.

The new Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) will boast 700,000 square metres of internal space for a passenger terminal (ie the MTB), a cargo facility, a restaurant and retail space.

The size of the MTC is so impressive that it will be visible from 1.5 km away. The facility can accommodate 8,500 passengers per hour and up to 30 million per year. The central space of the terminal building could hold three full-sized football pitches and features a ceiling that’s 52 metres tall at its highest point. This is taller than the Emirates Palace and will include 28,000 square metres of retail outlets and restaurants.

XtralisLASERSCANNER

Chief among the challenges around protecting the MTB is the massive open space where smoke will be diluted, an effect compounded by air conditioning systems. VESDA’s early and reliable detection combined with the VLS capability of monitoring the protected space by sectors were key factors that resulted in the selection of the Xtralis solution.

Additionally, temperatures in the terminal could range from hot to cold, depending on the weather. VESDA is the only detector that could ensure early and reliable detection under these conditions.

The VESDA LaserScanner (VLS) is similar to the VESDA LaserPlus (VLP) detector, but also includes a valve mechanism in the inlet manifold and software to control the airflow from the four sectors (pipes). This configuration enables a single zone to be divided into four separate sectors, for example, distinguishing between separate voids within a room.

The VLS draws air from all sectors in use. If the smoke level reaches the Adaptive Scan Threshold, the VLS performs a Fast Scan of each pipe to identify which pipe is carrying smoke. If more than one pipe is transporting smoke, the sector with the highest smoke concentration is scanned first.

Once Fast Scan is completed and the sector with the highest smoke concentration is identified, the VLS continues to closely monitor all four sectors (pipes) to keep a check on fire growth and maintain full protection of the area.

There are four alarm levels (Alert, Action, Fire 1 and Fire 2) for each sector (pipe). The sensitivity for each alarm level can be set to ensure the optimum alarm thresholds are applied for each sector.

Rossiyskie Zheleznye Dorogi employs Xtralis’ VESDA-E VLQ to protect vital compact Data Rooms

Russian Railways (Rossiyskie Zheleznye Dorogi, or RZhD) owns and operates Russia’s entire rail system, annually carrying over one billion passengers. With more than 85,000 km of track to maintain and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight shipped each year, RZhD operates the third largest rail network in the world.

RZhD has 12 main lines, many of which provide direct connections to the European and Asian national railway systems including Finland, France, Germany, Poland, China, Mongolia and North Korea.

To support its logistically complex and economically vital operation, RZhD maintains a large number of Data Rooms which vary in size but have one thing in common: the key-critical computing and switching equipment contained in each must be protected from smoke and fire.

As a result, RZhD selected VESDA by Xtralis for this important task.

Xtralis solutions currently protect approximately 50% of new metro and subway constructions worldwide. Indeed, RZhD already employs various VESDA models, from the VFT-15 addressable aspirating smoke detector to Laser Compact (VLC), Laser Focus (VLF), Laser Plus (VLP) and Laser Scanner (VLS).

These solutions protect seven larger Data Rooms on key railway lines, including Privolzhsk, Gorky, South Ural, West Siberian, Oktyabrskaya Railways, Far Eastern Railways and North-Caucasus Railways.

With a communications network modernisation, RZhD began deploying compact Data Rooms across its network. Until recently, these locations, with areas up to 12 m2, featured conventional detection. Upon the introduction of VESDA-E VLQ, RZhD immediately began a program to equip these Data Rooms with VESDA-E VLQ units.

RZhD recognised that, even if small in scale, fires within spaces housing critical infrastructure can result in substantial transportation interruptions. Common causes of fire in these environments include overheating electrical components, cables, power supplies and faulty lighting or mechanical systems.

Xtralis created VESDA-E VLQ specifically to deliver cost-effective very early warning smoke detection for compact areas like Data Rooms. A single VLQ unit can replace as many as four standard spot-type smoke detectors, protecting areas up to 100 m2.

As the RZhD network continues to grow, Xtralis expects to continue to equip the vital rail transport system with VESDA-E VLQ detection solutions.

Xtralis VESDA-E VEA aspirating smoke detector receives major endorsement from Intrepid

The recently released VESDA-E VEA aspirating smoke detector has received a major endorsement from Intrepid Electronic Systems Inc, a leading fire, security and technology solutions provider serving the greater San Francisco Bay Area of the USA.

Intrepid is a certified VESDA PRO – an elite, invitation-only group of dealers dedicated to delivering excellence in design, installation, commissioning, service and maintenance for Xtralis’ detection products. Intrepid clients are some of the world’s most famous brands and include Google, Novartis and Pixar Studios.

“Intrepid Electronic Systems Inc has installed and evaluated the VESDA-E VEA in our Oakland and San Jose offices and performed demonstrations to a number of prestigious corporate customers,” commented Kurt Brinkman, the owner of Intrepid Electronics Systems. “After seeing the VESDA in action, they ordered a VEA system for their own evaluation in a riser application to control smoke dampers using VEA addressable sample points.”

Brinkman went on to state: “The VESDA-E VEA was simple to install and worked perfectly during customer demonstrations. The key features that stood out to the clients were that the VEA provides end-to-end system integrity monitoring, integrated blowback to clean sample points and ease of annual testing and maintenance. Access to the sample point was not necessary for regular testing and maintenance. These features overcame any access issues they had for their riser application. From my own perspective, I was impressed with the performance of the VEA. The concept of centralised maintenance is great. I can see many applications where uninterrupted servicing is of value to our customers.”

VESDA-E VEA is the only addressable detector on the market that delivers ‘assured detection’ through active sampling, proactive self-supervision, auto-cleaning and the highest longevity with sustained sensitivity for the laser detection chamber.

The centralised detection architecture (exhibiting up to 120 sampling points), coupled with auto supervision and cleaning, lowers servicing time by up to 90% and decreases total cost of ownership. Dealers can multiply their service revenues and margins with the dramatic increase in productivity.

End user customers will benefit from unobtrusive and interruption-free servicing that’s a ‘must’ for environments like hospitals and other 24/7 operations.

Superior connectivity options and an iVESDA mobile app allow for remote monitoring and ensure effective response at the local level and by Fire Brigades, in turn minimising the loss of property and business interruption.
