Smurfit Kappa synergises lone worker protection across all UK sites thanks to ANT Telecom

The Smurfit Kappa Group plc, the corrugated packaging company, has unified its complete lone worker protection solutions across 19 UK sites with the assistance of ANT Telecom.

ANT Telecom has been working with Smurfit Kappa since 2011 and initially provided lone worker devices across five of the company’s sites to protect employees when working alone. These devices are designed to provide lone worker ‘SOS’ and ‘Man Down’ facilities in both normal and harsh environments whereby end users can raise an alert when the device’s in-built panic button has been pressed or the tilt mechanism activated.

Nigel Elias, UK HSE manager at Smurfit Kappa, said: “The well-being of all of our staff is something we take very seriously and ensuring protection for our workers, especially when they’re working alone, is paramount. ANT Telecom’s lone worker devices have helped reassure our staff of their safety and give them the confidence that, should an incident occur, an alarm is triggered.”

More recently, Smurfit Kappa wanted to enhance the lone worker solution and protect lone workers across its other sites. “We needed a way of ensuring that an alert had reached the correct response team and had been dealt with in a timely manner, with complete visibility of the alarm’s audit trail,” explained Elias.

In response, ANT Telecom presented its Automated Incident Manager, a critical alarm management platform that integrates with the hand-held lone worker devices. The solution automatically distributes the triggered alarm’s information to designated local response teams and escalates the alarm if it’s not acknowledged, thereby ensuring the incident is dealt with without delay. 

Elias continued: “Alerting selected responders for each location is key for a multiple-site organisation such as ours. The hosted version of the solution was ideal due to its rapid deployment capability. The effectiveness of immediate alerts and scalability quickly prompted our decision to roll out the solution, along with lone worker Protector devices, across 19 of our sites, in turn enabling us to implement a more effective and robust lone worker process across the group.”

Elias went on to state: “Our workforce isn’t wholly comprised of lone workers. Therefore, a challenge for us was educating staff that, when they’re working on their own, they need to be protected should an incident occur. With ANT Telecom’s help and the business’ consultative approach, we’ve built awareness of lone worker safety right across the company. This is something that has helped the business immensely in terms of improving employee morale.”

To reinforce this further, ANT Telecom provided each individual site with a well-structured training initiative for how the system works. Representatives have worked closely with Smurfit Kappa’s staff and continue to monitor the solution across the myriad sites involved in order to ensure that it’s maintained and working effectively.

Vanderbilt highlights commitment to quality with ISO 9001 certification

Vanderbilt, the state-of-the-art security systems developer, has had its commitment to Best in Class quality management highlighted by achieving the prestigious ISO 9001 certification. This latest accolade is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to make its processes as agile as possible and set the standard in what’s now an increasingly competitive market.

ISO is the world’s largest developer of voluntary international standards that acknowledge industry Best Practice.

Since it was first published in 1987, ISO 9001 has become the world’s most established quality management framework and is currently used by over a million companies across the globe.

The standard is based on a number of principles including a company’s commitment to excellence and its stakeholders, and a willingness to work towards continually improving efficiencies.

“A desire to operate to the highest standards of quality runs through everything we do,” stated Uta Ragnitz, head of quality and process management at Vanderbilt. “ISO 9001 rubber stamps our credentials through better integration and alignment of internal processes, which will lead to increased productivity and results. In addition, more effective use of resources, improved communication, planning and administration will define a standard of operation that exceeds our customers’ expectations and ensures that they view us as the security solutions supplier of choice.”

Having completed the successful acquisition of Security Products from Siemens in 2015, Vanderbilt’s ISO 9001 certification maintains the level of quality that its customers expect and allows the business to enhance customer satisfaction and improve customer loyalty, leading to repeat business. These processes will also help the organisation gain market share through flexible and fast responses to market opportunities.

Rigorous audit process

Vanderbilt’s quality management system was externally certified through Intertek, a multinational certification body that has helped companies around the world improve performance and become more efficient for over 130 years.

A rigorous audit process took place over two days. Auditor Hans Tjornvik from Intertek explained: “I was thoroughly impressed with the level of work that Vanderbilt has put into its quality management system, as well as the company’s dedication to the continual improvement of its processes. So much so, in fact, that I would place the business in the Top 10 of the companies I’ve audited during my career.”

The hard work is all set to continue, as Vanderbilt looks to meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, the latest revision of the standard.

Joe Grillo, the company’s managing director, concluded: “I would like to congratulate the team for all the hard work put into achieving this important standard. Our culture of quality improvement is vital. The discipline and framework provided by our system creates an environment that will help us achieve our corporate objectives.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service keeps public informed thanks to CrowdControlHQ’s social media platform

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is using a social media risk management and compliance platform from CrowdControlHQ to monitor and govern its corporate social media accounts including Twitter and Facebook. More than 30 users across the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service access corporate social media accounts via the platform’s central dashboard.

There has been an increase in engagement witnessed across all accounts in the last two years which has seen the number of Twitter followers double to over 17,000.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service uses social media for two-way communication with residents and county stakeholders, including other Fire and Rescue Services and local Government officials businesses as well as schools in the area.

CrowdControlHQ was selected for the central management of the Fire and Rescue Service’s social media activity following research and a presentation from the company.

Caroline Jones, digital and media services manager at Cheshire Fire and Rescue, explained: “We chose CrowdControlHQ for the level of control and analytics that the company’s solution provides. We wanted a platform where we could allow multiple people to post to corporate accounts. CrowdControlHQ does that safely and securely and it gives a history of all activity, for example who has posted to what and where. Information like that is important for audit purposes.”

Management from a single point

Using CrowdControlHQ makes it possible to manage corporate social media accounts from a single point. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service chose to have just one account for each social media channel rather than each fire station or areas of the service posting to individual accounts. This means it’s easier for the public and other stakeholders to receive updates by finding, following and commenting on corporate accounts rather than multiple social media accounts for different fire stations across the region.

Jones continued: “Social media is a great way to communicate with the public. Where there are incidents throughout the day it’s really easy, thanks to the central control in CrowdControlHQ, to publish a Tweet or post a message on Facebook and to then plan Tweets for the weekend. Recently, in just 28 days we had 437,000 impressions and posted 168 Tweets. The management team takes social media very seriously and fully supports it as a communications channel.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also promotes other Fire and Rescue Services’ campaigns and champions national safety initiatives such as the annual road safety campaign using Twitter and Facebook, with links to a web page. CrowdControlHQ is used to plan Tweets and posts in advance and then measure the success of campaigns using the analytics generated.
