ONVIF reflects on 2018 activities at 10th Annual General Meeting

ONVIF, the global standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, held its Annual General Meeting earlier this month, with an overview of important activities in 2018 and perspectives on the year ahead the order of the day. Attendees heard presentations on the final release of Profile T, an advancement which represents how ONVIF is keeping pace with technological advancements that affect product development and interoperability between IP-based physical security products.

In an acknowledgement of the organisation’s 10th Anniversary, ONVIF chairman Per Björkdahl highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past decade, including an overview of the six ONVIF Profiles, with a clear emphasis on the newly-released Profile T for advanced video streaming.

Collectively, the ONVIF Profiles provide support for more than 10,000 conformant products that are increasingly included in various bid and specification processes in projects around the world. Björkdahl also cited the continued involvement of ONVIF as part of the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission’s TC79 for international standardisation.

ONVIF also recognised the contributions of four individuals from various ONVIF Technical Committees for their work on different profiles and committees. Fredrik Svensson of Axis Communications and Dora Han of Hikvision were recipients of the ONVIF Award acknowledging individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to the organisation. As chairman of the Profile T Working Group, Svensson was a leading force in the development and successful final release of the Profile T specification. ONVIF targets future Profile developments at 2014 Annual Membership Meeting

ONVIF – the global standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products – hosted its annual Membership Meeting late last month. Attendees heard presentations on ONVIF success stories from 2014 (including the release of two new Profiles), as well as an outline of new initiatives in the pipeline for 2015 (among them the release of Profile Q and a new client test tool).

The audience at this year’s meeting, which for the first time was held via webinar, enjoyed a welcome address from ONVIF Steering Committee chairman Per Björkdahl (of Axis Communications) who spoke about ONVIF’s growth. The organisation now boasts 500 members representing six continents and more than 4,000 Profile-conformant products.

With the successful 2014 releases of Profile G for recording and storage and Profile C for access control, Björkdahl said that, in relation to the issue of future Profiles, ONVIF will continue to build on its vision and mission that all security systems will eventually share a single interface.

“ONVIF’s growth this year indicates just how vital our work is to the wider security and technology communities,” said Björkdahl. “Listening to what the market wants and needs and obtaining feedback will be instrumental in our future Profile developments.”

Topsgrup ranked India’s most trusted security services brand

Topsgrup has been ranked as India’s most trusted security services brand in The Brand Trust Report ‘India: Study 2014’ covering 20,000 brands across 16 cities.

Topsgrup is India’s largest security group employing more than 93,000 trained and highly motivated employees around the world.

For its part, The Brand Trust Report is an annual study carried out in 16 cities around the country, researching the trust, attitudes and preferences that consumers place on more than 20,000 brands and publishing the most trusted ones on a Brand Trust Index.

This year’s study, which involved participants between the ages of 21 and 50, has listed South Korean electronics giant Samsung as ‘India’s most trusted brand’, followed closely by Sony and Tata at second and third place respectively.

In last year’s report, these three brands had ranked second, third and fifth.

Dr Richie Nanda, the global chairman of Topsgrup and The Shield Group (the UK’s ninth largest business security company), commented: “We’re delighted with this news. It truly reflects our commitment to our customers and other stakeholders. Special credit must go to the team as they are amazing ambassadors who put a truly personal touch to the services we provide and the customers who completely place their trust and security in our hands. This ranking brings great pride to Topsgrup, and also brings a lot of responsibility. We always endeavour to uphold the trust and loyalty that our clients put into our products and services.”

Ramesh Iyer, CEO and vice-chairman of Topsgrup, added: “Kudos to ‘Team Topsgrup’. This accolade could not have been achieved without the joint efforts of all our employees. Our vision remains to become the most respected security brand in the world, and this announcement further endorses our commitment to achieving this aim. We’re particularly pleased to be recognised by such a leading national survey, and even more so to see that we’re highly regarded by clients. We look forward to the next 12 months with optimism to build on this success and continue serving our clients with the same professionalism and support that only Topsgrup can provide.”

Details of The Brand Trust Report

According to The Brand Trust Report, this year’s research sample consisted of 2,500 consumer-influencers and 15,000 hours of fieldwork.

The study generated close to five million data points across 20,000 brands. The top 1,200 brands have been listed in this year’s report. These brands have been classified into 284 different categories (there were 213 categories in 2013).

Considered one of the most respected brands in the security solutions space, Topsgrup is acknowledged by the business fraternity, the federal and state Government and even industry peers as pioneers of the security industry business in India.

The company’s 100% acquisition of The Shield Group (a British security firm) back in 2012 – coupled with some of its strategic acquisitions in India as well as innovative solutions and services – has established it as an emerging global security group.

Home Office: ‘Online advice service launched to thwart mobile phone thieves’

A new online advice service to help people protect their mobile phone handsets from thieves has gone live today. The advice has been published on Police.uk with the support of major phone manufacturers Apple, Blackberry, LG, Samsung, Sony, Nokia and Windows Phones.

The service encourages members of the public to make more use of their phone’s security features, including innovations such as tracking, wiping data from or locking stolen handsets remotely using another Internet-enabled device.

The service also provides links to information on each manufacturer’s security features, including how to switch them on.

There are tips on avoiding mobile phone theft in the first place, such as taking extra care to keep handsets secure in busy locations and never leaving a mobile phone unattended.

Mobile phones are an attractive target for thieves. Handsets can be sold for hundreds of pounds overseas, where the newest models are not yet available

Mobile phones are an attractive target for thieves. Handsets can be sold for hundreds of pounds overseas, where the newest models are not yet available

Statistics on mobile phone theft

In 2012-2013 there were 742,000 victims of mobile phone theft in England and Wales. Sixteen to 24-year-olds are the most likely age group to be the target of ‘theft from the person’ offences.

Crime prevention minister Norman Baker has held a series of meetings with leaders in the mobile phone manufacturing industry to discuss what more can be done to tackle mobile phone theft.

“Crime is down more than 10% but theft from the person has gone up, bucking the overall trend,” explained Baker. “It’s clear much of this is generated by the theft of mobile phones, iPads and the like. I have challenged the industry to do more to make such thefts unattractive, for example by making it easier to immobilise stolen devices. I’m pleased to see that we are now making progress.”

Baker continued: “One part of this is the online advice service which is a vital new tool that will help people protect their handsets and make would-be thieves think twice. Mobile phone technology is changing all the time and we need innovative solutions to ensure we stay ahead of criminals.”

Leader in responding to mobile phone crime

The UK is a world leader in responding to mobile phone crime, with the industry and the police already working together to block stolen phones within 48 hours – stopping them being re-used in this country and making them less valuable.

Mobile phones are an attractive target for thieves. Handsets can be sold for hundreds of pounds overseas, where the newest models are not yet available.

Latest figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales showed 40% of thefts from the person involve a mobile phone.

The latest quarterly police recorded crime statistics were published in January, and cover the three months to the end of September 2013. They show ‘theft from the person offences’ are up by 7% and a rise in shoplifting offences of 4%.

The Government has started publishing street-level information on ‘theft from the person’ on crime maps so that Police and Crime Commissioners and the public can hold their local force to account.
