Evolution invests in people development with appointment of Louise Gough as Human Resources manager

Evolution, the integrated fire and security solutions specialist, has appointed Louise Gough as its new Human Resources (HR) manager to lead the business’ recruitment strategy, implement new training and development opportunities, manage employee relations and provide support to the wider business.

Gough joins Evolution with a wealth of HR management experience, including eight years’s service with a market-leading integrated security business where she was also involved in project and bid work and facilities management. Prior to that, Gough worked for a number of large manufacturing and construction firms.

Now, Gough is looking forward to helping drive even further business growth at Evolution. “It’s a very exciting time for the business,” explained Gough in conversation with Risk Xtra. “The workforce has expanded considerably already this year and further growth is expected as a result of the business being successful in winning some large projects n the UK, the Republic of Ireland and further afield in Europe.”

Further, Gough stated: “I hope to add real value to the business and will start by closely reviewing our recruitment and wider people strategies and use my knowledge and experience to implement new methods that enable us to work smarter, while also enhancing our strong position within the integrated security sector. I want to take the HR burden away from the senior managers and allow them to focus more closely on their own roles, which in turn will lead to more proactive and productive teams.”

NSI supports World Accreditation Day 2019

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) offered its full support to World Accreditation Day 2019 (#WAD2019). A global initiative celebrating accreditation, the event (which took place on Sunday 9 June) focused on accredited bodies like the NSI adding value in supply chains.

This facility will help to distinguish certificates issued by accredited conformity assessment bodies (CABs), such as the NSI, from certificates issued by non-accredited CABs and to check the authenticity of a certificate.

Halma plc is to join the Fire Section of Euralarm and will now benefit from Euralarm’s services in terms of representation towards European institutions and standardisation organisations. KnowBe4 study reveals 92% of organisations’ biggest security concern is end users

KnowBe4, the provider of the world’s largest security awareness training and simulated phishing platform, has released the results of new research. The company’s report examines over 350 organisations globally and reveals the security weaknesses and concerns within them. On average, 81% of organisations had some degree of concern around security issues.

Cyber crime continues to evolve and become more sophisticated. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning are leveraged by many criminal organisations to help them better understand how to improve their attacks and they’re now targeting specific industry verticals, organisations and even individuals.

Increases in the frequency of ransomware, phishing and crypto-jacking attacks have been experienced by businesses of nearly every size, vertical and location.

When it comes to attack vectors, data breaches are the primary concern, with credential compromise coming a close second. These two issues go hand-in-hand as the misuse of credentials remains the foremost attack tactic in data breaches. That’s according to Verizon’s 2018 Data Breach Investigations Report.

Phishing and ransomware ranked next, demonstrating that organisations are still not completely prepared to defend themselves against these relatively “old” attack vectors.

Other key findings

*92% of organisations rank end users as their primary security concern. At the same time, security awareness training along with phishing testing tops the list of security initiatives that organisations need to implement

*Organisations today have a large number of attack vectors to prevent, monitor for, detect, alert and remediate. In terms of attacks, 95% of those organisations surveyed are most concerned with data breaches

*Ensuring security is in place to meet General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements is still a challenge for 64% of organisations, despite the GDPR’s fine details having been public knowledge for quite some time

*Attackers’ use of compromised credentials is such a common tactic. 93% of organisations are aware of the problem, but still have lots of work to do to stop it

*When it comes to resources, 75% of organisations don’t have an adequate budget

“2018 was a prolific year for successful cyber attacks, with many of them caused by human error,” said Stu Sjouwerman, CEO of KnowBe4. “IT organisations are tasked with establishing and maintaining a layered security defence. The largest concern, as demonstrated again in this report, is employees making errors. Organisations must start their defence by establishing a security culture. In order to combat the escalation of social engineering, they absolutely have to ensure that users are trained and tested.”

Remote sites upgrade delivers enhanced security for energy provider

Working to a tight ten-week schedule, four teams of Secom engineers recently completed a significant electronic security upgrade at no less than 150 critical sites resident within the UK’s energy infrastructure network.

The project – covering offices as well as remote locations with no staff – involved replacing key legacy equipment and software to create a superior platform for the remote monitoring of CCTV surveillance systems. It brought the 150 sites up to the same high standards of security as the customer’s other 250-plus sites across the UK.

Phil Lamb, Secom’s general manager for regional sales, feels that installation of new transmission units has allowed a switch for all of the customer’s sites to a more robust and cutting-edge video control platform in the Alarm Receiving Centre.

“Security is of course a major consideration for infrastructure service providers, but can prove to be challenging because of the many remote locations needed to ensure uninterrupted delivery to consumers nationwide. Reliable CCTV and alarm systems are important tools in dealing with issues that might affect the continuity of supply or any other risks of compromising security or Health and Safety concerns if, for example, there’s an unauthorised entry.”

Lamb said the customer was facing a critical need as its existing transmission units had become obsolete. With the existing video management software there was a growing risk of losing connectivity with remote sites – and also, therefore, visibility of site issues.

“The decision to replace obsolete hardware and software was initiated to mitigate the risk of major security incidents by creating a more stable platform. Our role was to replace the end-of-life kit with the latest generation transmission units. As the incumbent service provider, we have intimate knowledge of each site and could evade potential issues, using our engineering skills to design issues out of the tight schedule by dint of using detailed process maps.”

The software platform was upgraded to meet customer expectations. Due to the nature of the replacement project, Secom hand-picked engineers for the four teams and also provided dedicated project managers.

Evolution maintains quality standards with ISO certification

Evolution, the integrated fire and security solutions business, has achieved ISO 9001:2015 accreditation for Quality Management Systems.

The previous ISO 9001:2008 accreditation was well integrated within Evolution’s processes and procedures, enabling a smooth transition to the new standard which includes a number of important developments.

One of the most significant is the need for a documented risk management process identifying the potential risks to the business. This required a comprehensive review of the company’s business continuity plan to enable the newly- created Risk Register to record the key areas at risk (along with the level of risk) in greater detail.

New emergency processes have also been created to include appropriate control measures designed to mitigate risks and identify those who may be affected.
