Evolution launches dedicated retail security website

Evolution, the integrated fire and security business, has launched a dedicated website for its recently-introduced specialist retail division.

The website (evoretailuk.com) is an easy-to-use, simple to navigate showcase for the company’s retail expertise, demonstrating both ‘traditional’ and ‘next generation’ products and systems to protect assets before, during and even after they leave a store.

Philip McKelvey, head of retail sales at Evolution, has explained to Risk UK that the website will be expanded as the division grows.

“We can provide best advice and consultancy on all aspects of security, working with the latest products and technologies from the UK and Europe,” said McKelvey. “Our current range of RFID tags and labels will be constantly updated to include anti-counterfeiting measures. These will all be highlighted and promoted online.”

“It’s time to bury hardware-based security solutions” argues VoipSec’s CEO

Paul German, CEO at VoipSec, believes now is the time for organisations to “bury” dedicated hardware-based security solutions.

“Recent years have seen a fundamental transformation in IT strategy, with networks being more agile and swiftly deployed and applications now deliverable quickly, in any location and scaled to meet an organisation’s requirements,” said German. “From virtualised hardware to network function virtualisation and software defined networking, the hardware and network infrastructure has become decoupled from the application and the application itself is increasingly located anywhere across the cloud.”

According to German, this decoupled approach itself demands a different approach to security. It can no longer be defined by network controls because those networks are virtual, disparate and remote. “When organisations access applications via an Internet address,” commented German, “the physical location is increasingly unknown. Security, therefore, needs to be elastic and flexible.”

German explained that the hardware-based, dedicated Session Border Controller (SBC) doesn’t fit into this model. As an approach to securing the VoIP network, German feels it’s “fundamentally flawed” on many levels.

“It constrains an organisation’s virtualisation strategy. How can a company quickly spin up new cloud-based voice applications, for example? As organisations look to gain the cost, agility and scalability offered by hardware and network virtualisation, the hardware SBC is clearly a problem.”

German added: “Perhaps the most concerning issue is that this approach is flawed from a pure security perspective. Hardware SBCs are considered both one off investments and one off deployments. As every security Best Practice model will attest, with a constantly changing threat landscape any failure to undertake routine updates will leave the organisation vulnerable.”

To be effective, as far as German’s concerned, security solutions must reflect the emerging risk and the current deployment trend.

“A software only model that’s continually updated to mitigate the evolving threat landscape is essential. Software-based SBCs, either on premise or in the cloud, also explore community-led intelligence about threats and risk experiences to rapidly disseminate new threat information and Best Practice. This combination of routine product updates with shared intelligence ensures an attack on a single organisation can be quickly transformed into a patch or update that protects every business from the new risk.”

Despite the widespread adoption of VoIP, the majority of SBC vendors are simply failing to respond and still advise an implement once model. “They fail to update customers on the evolving threat landscape and they cannot support the agile, decoupled infrastructures now required. It begs the question: ‘Just what is the value of the hardware-based SBC?'”

Chubb launches new website to help UK employers manage business risk

Chubb Fire & Security has launched a new website featuring the same products and services, but with a redesigned approach towards customer focus. With a fresh look and feel, the new site allows users to more easily access the services they require, ensuring a better customer journey.

TDSi set to showcase latest web-based security solutions at Intersec 2017

Integrated security solutions developer TDSi is gearing up for its forthcoming appearance at Intersec 2017 (running from 2224 January in Dubai), which will feature the introduction of the company’s new GARDiS web-based range of software and hardware solutions to the Middle East market on Stand S1-A09.

Axis Communications publishes detailed Sustainability Report for 2014

Network camera specialist Axis Communications has issued its Sustainability Report for 2014, with environmental considerations, business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) very much in focus. The company’s fifth annual Sustainability Report describes the progress made in a number of fields such as environmental impact and anti-corruption. Great progress has also been made in work dedicated to informing and auditing suppliers in order to ensure compliance with Axis’ Supplier Code of Conduct. The Sustainability Report was prepared according to the G4 global reporting standard.

“Axis Communications works proactively with sustainability issues on a long-term basis since a responsible attitude is an important success factor for our global business operations,” explained Ray Mauritsson, the company’s president. “I’m proud of what we have achieved during 2014, from optimising our logistics flows to minimising our environmental impact as well as countering corruption in the value chain and working to create a safer and more secure world.”

Some important points raised in the 2014 Sustainability Report are as follows:

  • Axis’ comprehensive anti-corruption work has been intensified. All employees have participated in training and more than 100 of the company’s distributors have undertaken to comply with the company’s policy of zero tolerance against corruption, bribes and conflicts of interests
  • 96% of Axis’ suppliers that have an impact on the company in terms of the environment or sustainability have either been audited by Axis supplier inspectors or are certified to ensure that they follow Axis’ requirements relating to environmental considerations, the working environment and occupational safety
  • Axis has managed to cut the company’s carbon dioxide emissions by 13% during 2014, primarily through its optimised logistics flows and reduced distances for transportation
  • The company has continued to phase out PVC plastic from its products while 65% of the company’s network cameras and video encoders are now PVC-free
  • During 2014, Axis’ employees participated in surveys conducted by Great Place to Work in Sweden, USA and Germany and the company realised top positions in all countries
  • In order to raise environmental awareness among its suppliers, Axis held webinars through its training program Axis Supplier Academy, whereby all suppliers were informed about the company’s views on sustainability issues as well as rules and laws for material accounting

In the 2014 Sustainability Report, as stated Axis has changed over to the new G4 reporting standard which is an update of the leading rules for sustainability reporting drawn up by the Global Reporting Initiative.

As part of Axis’ transition to the new reporting standard, the company has initiated dialogue with key target groups and stakeholders which has provided important insights that can be used to continue improving the company’s long-term sustainability work.
