ONVIF reflects on year’s activities and achievements at 2019 Annual Membership Meeting

ONVIF, the global standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, recently held its Annual Membership Meeting to provide members with an overview of important activities that have occurred in 2019 and outline bold plans for the year ahead. Attendees heard presentations on the growth of ONVIF as well as plans for new Profile development.

ONVIF chairman Per Björkdahl highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past year, in particular focusing on the market’s continued support for the Profile concept, with the number of conformant products surpassing 13,000 earlier this year.

With six Profiles to choose from and additional ones in development, ONVIF Profiles have increasingly been included in various bid and specification processes in projects around the world, making it the de facto interface in the industry.

Björkdahl also noted the continued involvement of ONVIF in the International Electrotechnical Commission’s work on international standardisation, in addition to new proposals for cloud connectivity and interoperability between multiple systems.

Pelco introduces rugged Spectra Professional IR PTZ camera

Pelco by Schneider Electric, one of the global leaders when it comes to intelligent video surveillance solutions, has released the Spectra Professional IR – a rugged camera ideal for transportation-focused projects, city surveillance, deployment at airports and seaports and for use in commercial markets.

The Spectra Professional IR features an ‘above the horizon’ viewing capability providing greater coverage of bridges, overpasses and building exteriors without mounting additional cameras. The camera also provides built-in IR illumination on areas of interest such as roadways, ports, parking spaces and building perimeters up to 150 metres away, thereby offering a solution for end user customers who are perhaps frustrated with the inability of typical PTZ cameras to capture key image details in poorly lit environments.

“Thanks to extensive R&D, Pelco has honed the technology to capture critical details in low light situations,” explained Todd Dunning, senior product manager at Pelco. “Spectra Professional IR also incorporates a ‘bubble-less’ design, which is a new feature for the company’s line of surveillance technology.”

Spectra Professional IR: benefits for end users

Assuring coverage of large areas, the Spectra Professional IR camera is designed for use in round-the-clock surveillance projects.

Key features include:
● ‘Look-Up’: The Spectra Professional IR can view 15 degrees above the horizon that enables customers to see areas that are difficult to view when using typical mounting locations including bridge supports and cables, higher floors of commercial buildings as well as ships at a distance from seaports
● Outstanding image quality in poorly lit areas: Primarily used for outdoor applications with poor lighting conditions, the IR technology allows operators to see details up to 150 metres away, where external visible lighting isn’t wanted or is unavailable. The technology also provides control of the illumination intensity and exposure in the camera, thereby enabling people and vehicles to be tracked with clarity wherever they move in the field of coverage, near or far
● Smart compression technology: Featuring H.265 and Pelco’s Smart Compression technology, the Spectra Professional IR lowers bandwidth and storage requirements between 30% and 70%, depending on the amount of motion in the scene. This is especially important for 24×7 surveillance
● ‘Digital Image Stabilisation’: Reducing blurring associated with camera motion, this feature allows the cameras to maintain a smooth image ideal for surveilling areas affected by high vehicle traffic or strong winds like bridges and light poles
● Simple installation: Using only one wire to connect, the Spectra Professional IR comes with three power options and an embedded hinge design, making it easy to connect to and providing greater flexibility during installation
● Full integration with VideoXpert and ONVIF-compliant VMS: Seamlessly presented in video management systems, allowing operators to easily track objects moving in the scene and zoom in for greater detail

Milestone Systems expands device support with launch of Pack 7.9 for partners and customers

Milestone Systems – the open platform company specialising in IP video management software (VMS) – has released Device Pack 7.9 for partners and customers using Milestone XProtect security solutions. Device Pack 7.9 has support for 1,012 tested ONVIF devices, all using the same optimised driver.

The XProtect Device Packs include tested and certified drivers optimised to enable the relevant capabilities of a camera or other hardware device to be managed by the XProtect software. Testing the drivers ensures the highest quality for a video surveillance solution, which is obviously important for total system operability, efficiency and stability.

Milestone works closely with the device manufacturers in the Camera Partner Program (CaPP) to achieve the optimal interaction between their devices and the XProtect VMS. The company has always promoted driver standards like ONVIF and remains dedicated to supporting the broadest range of cameras and devices on the market.

In the case of ONVIF-supported devices, it’s often assumed that a device which has passed the ONVIF test tool will just work in a given infrastructure. This isn’t always the case as there are marked idiosyncrasies that need to be taken into account to insure proper interoperability and leverage the full feature use of a device with a VMS.

Before ONVIF supported devices are listed on the supported hardware list on milestonesys.com, they’ve been tested to ensure 100% functionality with the XProtect open platform technology.

In the Milestone CaPP, this ONVIF functionality test can be done by Milestone or vendors can conduct the testing procedures in their own facility after they’ve completed a four-day Milestone training course. The ability to do the complete Milestone certification test can save time and costs for camera manufacturers in their go-to-market strategy.

Advanced compression support

Device Pack 7.9 also includes support for the Axis Zipstream technology, an advanced mode enabling variable compression as well as variable bit rate. According to Axis Communications, this can reduce the bandwidth requirement by up to 50% without major loss in picture quality.

This technology increases compression when less movement is detected in the video. Beyond reducing the bandwidth, the use of advanced compression technologies like Zipstream can also save disk space on the recording servers in a system.

The Milestone VMS has been supporting advanced compression technologies since 2012.

Extended support for Vivotek cameras has been added, so too 64 new devices from Dahua all based on ONVIF where the compliance test was conducted by Dahua.

Other vendors with new device support in this release include Pelco by Schneider, Vicon’s IQEye and Canon.
