ISM wins major IP communications contract in London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham

Intergrated Security Manufacturing (ISM), a specialist in the design, development and manufacture of intercom systems for major local authority projects, has won a significant contract to install its new IP-based communications technology at 800 dwellings in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

ISM’s IP-Connect advanced digital technology comprises a range of easy-to-use outdoor panels and indoor monitors to provide local authorities and tenants with a next generation solution that will deliver unprecedented levels of management and control.

Steve Smith, managing director of ISM, believes the contract is the largest local authority IP project of its kind to date, stating: “IP-Connect complements the existing Ultimate stable of intercoms and door entry equipment that’s already well-established in the UK. Beyond Hammersmith & Fulham, there has already been a great deal of interest not only in IP-Connect as a standalone solution, but also in how it can be integrated with our existing intercom and door entry products and the Genesys 2 ISMS.”

The new technology is being installed in partnership with Alphatrack Systems.

Send For Help recognised in prestigious ‘FT Future 100 UK’ listing

Send For Help (the lone worker protection business providing 24/7 emergency response via personal safety alarms) has been featured in the ‘FT Future 100 UK’ list recently published in The Financial Times and on FT.com. The prestigious list selected by an expert panel led by FT journalists features fast-growing UK companies that are also making an impact on their industry or, indeed, wider society.

The list is built on data from the ‘FT 1,000: Europe’s Fastest-Growing Companies’, in which Send For Help featured in April this year with a ranking at 625.

To make it into the first edition of the ‘FT Future 100 UK’, businesses had to excel in one of four categories: Environmental, Social and Governance, Disruption, Diversity and Consistent Growth. Send For Help was selected for the Disruption category, where the judges took into account measures such as R&D spend as a proportion of revenue and the company’s own pitch as a disrupter.

Operating through its subsidiary brands Skyguard, Peoplesafe and Guardian24, Send For Help supplies keyfob-sized GPS personal safety alarms and smart phone apps providing 24/7 protection to over 150,000 lone workers.

Send For Help’s Monitoring Centre has direct links to police Control Rooms, so it can bypass the 999 system and receive a faster emergency response if clients are threatened, attacked or are otherwise in some form of danger.

The Surrey-based tech firm has a varied client roster across a large number of private and public sectors, including over 180 NHS Trusts and major High Street retailers, City banks and national pub chains, estate agents, the police service and more than 200 local authorities.

Fire door safety campaigners “step up first line of defence”

Through Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW), fire door safety campaigners are working to ensure public and private sector landlords and building owners stop risking the lives of tenants and ensure fire doors are correctly inspected, specified, fitted and maintained.

Fire doors are the first line of defence against devastating fires and, when properly built, installed and maintained, they save lives and protect property. Despite this, fire doors across the UK are still often badly fitted, non-compliant, left propped open or damaged and, as a result, could be putting millions of lives at stake.

The team behind FDSW 2018 (which runs from 24-30 September) is gearing up for its campaign that will continue to educate about the critical role that fire doors play in delaying the spread of smoke and fire and keeping occupants and firefighters safe.

The FDSW campaign – entitled: ‘Fire Door Five: Shutting the Door on Fire and Smoke’ – aims to draw attention to the importance of properly-fitted and accredited fire doors as well as raising awareness of the dangers of smoke inhalation and the role that correctly installed fire doors can play in preventing the spread of both fire and smoke.

Part of the activity will see campaigners explore the need to establish a Building Safety Fund to help pay for vital and potentially life-saving fire safety improvements in Local Authority and Housing Association accommodation.

Informed decisions

Hannah Mansell, spokesperson for FDSW as well as being the British Woodworking Federation’s (BWF) head of technical research and insight, chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust, said: “Through Fire Door Safety Week, we will once more renew our efforts to ensure that residents, landlords and building owners across the UK are armed with the information they need to make informed decisions that will improve safety.”

Mansell continued: “There’s no doubt that, when fully-fitted with their correct and compatible components, properly installed and maintained, fire doors play a crucial role in saving lives in the event of a fire. The legacy of neglect means that more lives could be lost as a result of sub-standard fire protection measures. We know that the necessary corrective actions will cost money and that’s precisely why we are asking the Government set up a Building Safety Fund for Housing Associations and Local Authorities such that they can carry out replacement and repair works. Finance should not be used as an excuse. The stakes are too high.”

Mansell went on to state: “Tenants and the general public will, as always, play a key part and make sure their voices are heard by reporting fire doors that are propped open, damaged or in poor condition, rather than waiting for landlords or building owners to inspect fire doors. Indeed, as part of Fire Door Safety Week, we have created a Five-Step Fire Door Check to help people check their fire doors and empower them to report faults.”

Massive learning curve

Over the last year, there has been significant discussion about the responsibility of landlords, councils and Housing Associations to ensure the safety of their tenants, but according to Mansell there’s still a massive learning curve in terms of awareness about how fire doors that are correctly specified, installed, maintained and of course closed can limit the effect of fire and smoke, and what to do in the event of a fire.

“Due to this uncertainty, our focus for Fire Door Safety Week in 2018 is ‘shutting the door on fire and smoke’. We want to educate everyone on how effective fire doors can be in stopping the spread of fire and smoke.”

A national campaign, FDSW is run by the BWF, the BWF-Certifire Scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme in partnership with the Home Office’s own National Fire Safety Campaign. Throughout the week, there will be numerous events and campaign activities designed to raise awareness about the importance of fire door safety.

SALTO Systems attains prestigious Secured by Design certification

ECA/SELECT Survey finds buildings at heightened risk from cyber attack

The use of cyber attacks is becoming more prevalent as an effective tool to disrupt both business and politics. As a result of this, within industry it’s vital that steps are taken to protect buildings and infrastructure against potential threats.

To find out the current state of play, the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and Scottish Trade Association SELECT surveyed a range of clients in November and December last year on their approach to cyber security.

The feedback received from the ‘Connected Technology Survey for Clients’ emanated from a range of respondents, including consultants, engineers, end clients, local authorities and facilities managers.

The results show that almost four-in-ten clients (39%) don’t take any steps to protect smart installations in buildings from cyber threats. A further 49% cited the risk of hacking as a barrier to installing connected technology.

Steve Martin, head of specialist groups at the ECA, commented: “Given that ‘connected technology’ covers any technology, such as lighting or HVAC installations, this enables devices to communicate with each other over the Internet and undertake tasks. The risks from hacking are substantial.”

Currently, only 20% of the UK’s commercial buildings are considered to be ‘smart’. However, over the next four years, the global ‘Internet of Things’ market is expected to be worth over £1 trillion annually. “If we’re to keep pace with developments,” concluded Martin, “the issue of cyber security needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
