NSI supports World Accreditation Day 2019

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) offered its full support to World Accreditation Day 2019 (#WAD2019). A global initiative celebrating accreditation, the event (which took place on Sunday 9 June) focused on accredited bodies like the NSI adding value in supply chains. 

From a security and fire safety sector perspective, installers and service providers of security and fire safety systems and security guarding solution are a vital ‘link in the chain’ with their expertise at the point of delivery, keeping people safe, ensuring security solutions harness suitable technology and that they’re fit for purpose.

World Accreditation Day marked the work underway to launch ‘IAF CertSearch’, a website designed to provide buyers with the ability to verify management systems certificates such as ISO 9001 (itself a key component of NSI’s Gold approvals). This facility will help to distinguish certificates issued by accredited conformity assessment bodies (CABs), such as the NSI, from certificates issued by non-accredited CABs and to check the authenticity of a certificate.

National Security Inspectorate appoints new auditor in Northern Ireland

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI), the UK’s independent certification body specialising in the security, guarding and fire sectors, has appointed Clare McIntyre as security and fire systems auditor and lead auditor for ISO 9001 in Northern Ireland.

Having spent over 20 years in the sector within quality and operations management and system design, McIntyre brings a wealth of experience to the NSI’s expert auditing team. She previously worked for NSI approved companies, transitioning from one of the few female-nominated fire alarm designers to become a fully-integrated security and fire design engineer.

Having realised her passion for developing and improving standards within the industry, becoming an auditor for NSI was a natural progression in McIntyre’s career.

Richard Jenkins, the NSI’s CEO, commented: “We’re committed to recruiting auditors with practical experience, knowledge and understanding of our sector. Currently, the UK has the lowest percentage of females on the engineering register in the EU at only 7%. Therefore, Clare’s appointment may also serve to embed some change in what has, traditionally, been a male-dominated sector in the UK. ”

The NSI is proud to sponsor the ‘Outstanding Security Installer/Integrator’ category at next year’s Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs), which take place in London on 28 February.

The UK OSPAs is part of a global awards scheme currently running in eight countries and designed to recognise outstanding contributions and achievements within their respective security sectors. Following extensive research in 2014 by Perpetuity Research and Consultancy International on what constitutes outstanding performance, the OSPA categories and criteria were then standardised, providing an opportunity for countries to run their own evidence-based OSPAs, while also maintaining the ability to compete on an international level.

Nortech recognised for quality management standards compliance with ISO 9001 re-certification

People and vehicle access control system solutions specialist Nortech has recently been recognised as complying with the latest ISO 9001 standard. Nortech is proud of its approach to solutions engineering that’s designed to ensure quality and reliability in both its products and services.

The updated 2015 version of the ISO 9001 standard recognises businesses for their effective quality management and requires them to demonstrate that they can meet the regulatory requirements and apply the system effectively to benefit their customers. Receiving re-certification shows that Nortech is prepared for any current and future challenges.

JB Corrie accreditation sees fourth company approved to install ArmaWeave

A fourth company has now been accredited to install ArmaWeave, the approved high-security perimeter fencing system manufactured by Zaun. Specialist fencing installer JB Corrie has committed to training its site operatives in the installation methods for ArmaWeave developed by Zaun over time to make best use of the solution’s high-security woven fabric.

Impressed with the versatility of the system, JB Corrie is now installing the Zaun mesh on several security sites.

The company joins expert installer Allen Fencing Limited, systems integrator Crime & Fire Defence Systems and premier prison fencing installer Binns Fencing, a Zaun subsidiary, as an approved installer.

Contracts director Norton Welch said: “We’re delighted to have received this accreditation and look forward to working closely with Zaun to install its security products in the future.”

The company – which has been in business for over 100 years and is now in the ownership of the fourth generation Corrie family – installs integrated perimeter protection systems for high security applications and boasts military bases, utilities, power stations and airports among its clients.

Zaun established the installer scheme after increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

Panels can be raked

ArmaWeave is produced on the world’s largest steel loom at Zaun’s West Midlands manufacturing base. It boasts properties that give it distinct advantages against more traditional welded mesh systems, such as panels that can be raked to accommodate slopes. Therefore, installers require the necessary skill sets to set this up.

The wire of the panels has a tensile strength typically more than double that of welded panels so special methods are needed for cutting the panels during installation.

Zaun trained JB Corrie’s installation teams on the properties and tolerances of ArmaWeave and how it’s manufactured. The training is for ‘fencers’ with proven experience in high-security fencing work who are sponsored by a company that can demonstrate its professionalism through membership of a relevant trade organisation and valid UKAS-accredited ISO 9001 certification.

The certificate of training is only valid while the individual is working for the host company. This ensures that trained individuals are working properly under quality management to install the product.

With its partners, Zaun hopes to increase the adoption of ArmaWeave as the standard for secure sites of Critical National Infrastructure – such as the utilities, Data Centres and nuclear sites – while ensuring consistent installation quality.

BAFE issues updated fire extinguisher servicing competency scheme document

BAFE has released the documentation for the revision of its fire extinguisher maintenance/service scheme (SP101). This is now available via the BAFE website (www.bafe.org.uk/sp101-2017), with the revision coming into effect from 1 October 2017.

In April last year, after a lengthy consultation period, BAFE launched the review of its fire extinguisher maintenance (SP101/ST104) scheme with the creation of a scheme revision group chaired by Dave Russell. Over the last year, which has included a public consultation, changes have been made to update, enhance and strengthen the scheme.

The revised SP101 scheme continues to provide the best assurances to the industry and its customers of what defines a quality provider of fire extinguisher services in today’s market and also updates and strengthens the role of the fire extinguisher technician.

A BAFE-registered fire extinguisher technician has always been the defining way of acknowledging that a competent person is working on a given premises. This has now been enhanced further by including additional technical competence to the revised sections of BS 5306: Fire Extinguishing Installations and Equipment on Premises as well as requirements for having training in asbestos awareness and Health and Safety procedures.

The technician competency portfolio used by the BAFE assessors has also been reviewed, ensuring that all technicians who gain the esteemed BAFE Diploma continue to be the best in the industry. Passing the BS 5306 examination is only the first step in demonstrating understanding of the relevant standards to work competently in the field.

The scheme now also offers a dual route option. When the revised scheme goes live in October, organisations can gain third party certification via an ISO 9001 or a Management System route.

Both routes use the same audit criteria for fire extinguisher competencies, however, offering peace of mind for those individuals specifying a certified, competent provider that a BAFE-registered company with proficient technicians is an assured quality decision.

Zaun accredits installers to roll out “unique” ArmaWeave security solution

High security perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun is bolstering the ranks of approved installers for its “unique” intruder-resistant fencing.

ArmaWeave fencing is produced on the world’s largest steel loom at the company’s West Midlands manufacturing base. Crime & Fire Defence Systems engineers were trained in the installation of the product and, over the last two years, have installed kilometres of the high-security woven fencing at utilities sites right across the country.

Now Zaun has formally accredited Crime & Fire Defence Systems as an approved installer of the product, along with Zaun Group subsidiary Binns Fencing.

Zaun has established the new installer scheme because of increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

ArmaWeave boasts some unique properties which give it distinct advantages, but require some fresh skills and techniques to install. For example, unlike welded mesh, the panels can rake up and down hills such that installers require new skills to square up or rake the panels.

Training for installation teams

Zaun will be training installation teams on the properties and tolerances of ArmaWeave and how it’s manufactured. Instruction is aimed exclusively at ‘fencers’ with proven skills and experience in high-security fencing works and deals only with the specific new skills and techniques required to install ArmaWeave.

Trainers will share the secrets of installation methods Zaun has developed over time for ArmaWeave to make best use of the properties of the high-security fabric.

The training will be for experienced individuals sponsored by a company which can demonstrate its professionalism through membership of a relevant trade organisation and valid UKAS-accredited ISO 9001 certification. The certificate of training will only be valid while the individual is working for the host company. This will ensure that properly trained individuals working under proper quality management install the product.

The plan is to increase the adoption of ArmaWeave as the standard for secure sites of Critical National Infrastructure – such as utilities, Data Centres and nuclear sites – while ensuring consistent installation quality.

Zaun’s sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: “We invested in the steel loom ahead of the sales in the belief we could produce an innovative product that installers, specifiers and high-security facility managers would want. That has proven to be so true that we need to expand the number of contractors trained in installing it correctly.”

Resistance to attacks

ArmaWeave’s properties add substantial resistance to cutting attacks perpetrated with hand, powered and non-contact tools. The tight mesh pattern provides no climbing aids, again limiting the potential for intrusion.

ArmaWeave CPNI enhanced is tested to the very highest standards and can be combined with other intruder systems, electronics and access control to create the optimum in integrated fencing solutions. The product has also been approved for use with a range of microphonic PID cable systems after testing for many months at a Ministry of Defence facility.

Top level security without a performance delivered by Trigion

Trigion Security Services is working with managers at a number of prestigious theatres across London to provide electronic security solutions designed to keep staff, patrons and property alike safe in an unobtrusive manner that doesn’t deflect from the enjoyment of the performance.

With large crowds and high profile buildings to protect, the theatre owners were looking for a security company that could offer top level support. Trigion Security Services fitted the bill.

Neil Ricketts, technical services director at Trigion, informed Risk UK: “Theatres offer a number of rare security and safety challenges with large groups of people arriving and leaving at the same time, numerous staircases and corridors present as well as main auditoriums to protect. There are also a number of bars and concession stands, so we need to be able to keep an eye on the cash being handled.”

Ricketts continued: “Using a variety of electronic security equipment operated remotely from our Security Operations Centre, we can ensure there’s always a high level of security in place, even when the curtain has come down and everyone’s gone home.”

Trigion operates to the very highest standards in the industry and has gained Security Industry Authority Approved Contractor status in addition to ISO 9001. All Trigion Security officers are vetted and trained to BS 7858 and verified as such by the National Security Inspectorate.

Rigorous audit process

Vanderbilt’s quality management system was externally certified through Intertek, a multinational certification body that has helped companies around the world improve performance and become more efficient for over 130 years.

A rigorous audit process took place over two days. Auditor Hans Tjornvik from Intertek explained: “I was thoroughly impressed with the level of work that Vanderbilt has put into its quality management system, as well as the company’s dedication to the continual improvement of its processes. So much so, in fact, that I would place the business in the Top 10 of the companies I’ve audited during my career.”

The hard work is all set to continue, as Vanderbilt looks to meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, the latest revision of the standard.

UK security exporters Pyronix, TDSi and Texecom preview latest solutions at IFSEC Southeast Asia

Members of the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) Export Council are preparing to exhibit at IFSEC Southeast Asia, the region’s leading security, fire and safety exhibition and conference which takes place from 2-4 September in Kuala Lumpur.

Billed by organiser UBM Malaysia as the focal point for local security buyers and decision-makers, the event continues to grow year-on-year with no less than 350 exhibitors set to take part in 2015. Among them are 14 companies exhibiting as part of the UK Pavilion. This is organised by the BSIA.

Alex Carmichael appointed CEO at the SSAIB

The Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB), which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2014, has appointed its next CEO. Alex Carmichael – presently director of technical services and exports at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – will be taking over from Geoff Tate who announced earlier this year that he will be stepping down as CEO at the security, fire and telecare certification body after 16 years in the role.

At the BSIA, Carmichael – who joined the Trade Association back in 1998 in the role of technical officer – is responsible for co-ordinating all technical and quality matters within the Association. These duties include acting as the organisation’s representative on various UK and European standards committees and serving as the UK’s representative on various Cenelec and Euralarm committees monitoring EU Directives that directly impact BSIA members.

In addition, Carmichael’s responsible for membership liaison within the BSIA’s technical sections, and works closely with other industry organisations such as the ABI, ACPO, ACPOS and several inspectorates on technical and any other issues that may affect BSIA members.

Indeed, Carmichael’s existing duties on those UK and European committees, along with his strong technical background and close working relationship with a variety of industry organisations, afford him the ideal credentials to steer the SSAIB in its next phase of growth.

Carmichael’s background also includes over 20 years’ experience in the Army across various technical/engineering support roles with REME, as well as a short spell as an electromedical engineer with the NHS.

For the time being, Carmichael will remain at the BSIA and take up his new post next March following a handover period shadowing his successor. The BSIA is presently seeking a replacement for Carmichael to head the technical team at Kirkham House in Worcester.

Widely known and respected

“I’m delighted that someone with Alex’s skill set will be heading up the SSAIB,” enthused Geoff Tate. “I’ll be handing over the reins to someone with over 15 years’ involvement in the security sector where he’s widely known and respected.”

Tate continued: “Besides working with him during a transitional handover, I’ll remain in close contact with Alex as the SSAIB’s chairman. It’s a significant boost for the SSAIB to appoint a new CEO of such calibre and provides the foundation for our future. Founded in 1994 and based in Tyne & Wear, the SSAIB is a leading certification body for organisations providing electronic security systems, guarding security services, fire protection, alarm and telecare services systems in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

In addition to its product schemes, SSAIB also offers a range of management systems certification schemes, including ISO 9001 quality management systems certification and ISO 14001 environmental management systems certification.

Over 1,500 companies are now listed on the SSAIB’s register.
