Record number of businesses to benefit from free Manchester Security event

‘Manchester Security: Safe and Secure for Business’ takes place on Wednesday 20 September at St Ann’s Church in Manchester with a record number of businesses set to attend. With more than 250 pre-registrations to date, the event will provide the North West business community with valuable insights into current security issues, offering the latest advice to help better protect them against threats and acts of crime.

The day’s programme includes a formal opening by Assistant Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine and a presentation by Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hitchen (deputy head of intelligence for Counter-Terrorism Policing North West on the ‘Partnership Approach to the Threat from Terrorism in the UK’.

Gary Hibberd (managing director of Agenci) is to focus on ‘The Dark Web – A Real Journey into a Virtual World’, while Chief Inspector Gareth Parkin of Greater Manchester Police concentrates on ‘Policing the City’. A representative from SelectaDNA is going to be talking about ‘Using Synthetic DNA to Convict Criminals’.

The event is completely free to attend. Doors open at 8.30 am. Refreshments and breakfast snacks will be provided and the event will conclude at around 11.30 am.

SelectaDNA, Window Security Solutions and Noonan Services Group are sponsoring the event and their crime prevention products will be on display.

More junior officers honoured with Queen’s Police Medals

Nine ‘rank and file’ police officers have been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Police Medal by Her Majesty The Queen as part of the New Year Honours – three times the number honoured in the 2016 Birthday Honours.

In one of her final actions as Home Secretary, Prime Minister Theresa May recommended that more officers below senior ranks should receive the Queen’s Police Medal in order to recognise the vital role they play in protecting the public and address an imbalance over to whom the medal is awarded.

Police leaders responded by putting forward a number of officers from junior ranks from across England and Wales who have shown outstanding courage and distinguished service in the line of duty. More than half of the 17 Queen’s Police Medals announced on Friday 30 December have been awarded to officers below the rank of superintendent.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said: “These deserving recipients of Queen’s Police Medals have gone above and beyond the call of their duties and it’s absolutely right that we recognise all of those who serve our communities and keep us safe. I’m especially pleased by the response from policing leaders, who have made sure that a shift in nominations has led to a much more representative group of officers receiving the medal. I look forward to seeing many more brave and talented individuals at every rank of our police forces being honoured in this way in the future.”

The Queen’s Police Medal was instituted by its royal warrant in 1954 and is awarded to officers of any rank for acts of courage and conspicuous devotion to duty. It superseded the King’s Police Medal, which was originally created in 1909.

Brandon Lewis, Minister for Policing and the Fire Service, added: “There are exceptionally skilled, dedicated and professional officers in all areas of our police forces, from front line constables through to senior leaders. Honours such as the Queen’s Police Medal have been awarded for over 100 years to recognise some of their exceptional individual contributions. I’m delighted that more rank and file officers have been awarded the medal this year for dedication to their duties and acts of exceptional courage. I hope the example they’ve set continues to inspire the very best from officers and police staff in 2017.”

Seminar programme announced for ‘Manchester Security: Safe and Secure for Business’

The full programme has now been announced for the upcoming ‘Manchester Security: Safe and Secure for Business’ seminar, which will focus on providing businesses in the North West with valuable insights into current security issues facing the region.

The programme will be chaired by Jim Battle, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester, and includes a formal opening by Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan QPM. Presenters on the day are as follows:

*Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Mole, Head of the North West Counter-Terrorism Unit, on the changing face of terrorism and the importance of planning and preparation

*Superintendent Marcus Noden with an update on neighbourhood policing and how partnership working through Integrated Neighbourhood Management is being progressed

*A spokesperson from SelectaDNA explaining how synthetically manufactured DNA is proving to be a powerful tool in the fight against crime

The event takes place on Thursday 29 September at St Ann’s Church, St Ann’s Street, Manchester M2 7LF.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service keeps public informed thanks to CrowdControlHQ’s social media platform

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is using a social media risk management and compliance platform from CrowdControlHQ to monitor and govern its corporate social media accounts including Twitter and Facebook. More than 30 users across the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service access corporate social media accounts via the platform’s central dashboard.

There has been an increase in engagement witnessed across all accounts in the last two years which has seen the number of Twitter followers double to over 17,000.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service uses social media for two-way communication with residents and county stakeholders, including other Fire and Rescue Services and local Government officials businesses as well as schools in the area.

CrowdControlHQ was selected for the central management of the Fire and Rescue Service’s social media activity following research and a presentation from the company.

Caroline Jones, digital and media services manager at Cheshire Fire and Rescue, explained: “We chose CrowdControlHQ for the level of control and analytics that the company’s solution provides. We wanted a platform where we could allow multiple people to post to corporate accounts. CrowdControlHQ does that safely and securely and it gives a history of all activity, for example who has posted to what and where. Information like that is important for audit purposes.”

Management from a single point

Using CrowdControlHQ makes it possible to manage corporate social media accounts from a single point. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service chose to have just one account for each social media channel rather than each fire station or areas of the service posting to individual accounts. This means it’s easier for the public and other stakeholders to receive updates by finding, following and commenting on corporate accounts rather than multiple social media accounts for different fire stations across the region.

Jones continued: “Social media is a great way to communicate with the public. Where there are incidents throughout the day it’s really easy, thanks to the central control in CrowdControlHQ, to publish a Tweet or post a message on Facebook and to then plan Tweets for the weekend. Recently, in just 28 days we had 437,000 impressions and posted 168 Tweets. The management team takes social media very seriously and fully supports it as a communications channel.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also promotes other Fire and Rescue Services’ campaigns and champions national safety initiatives such as the annual road safety campaign using Twitter and Facebook, with links to a web page. CrowdControlHQ is used to plan Tweets and posts in advance and then measure the success of campaigns using the analytics generated.

James Leavesley, CEO at CrowdControlHQ, commented: “We have seen a variety of social media strategies emerging across Emergency Services providers tasked to drive communications objectives. Stuart Pizzey MBE joins The Shield Group as police liaison and commercial risk advisor

Former police officer Stuart Pizzey MBE has been appointed police liaison and commercial risk advisor at The Shield Group. Pizzey’s remit is to develop relationships with businesses across Greater Manchester and throughout the North West and advise on business risk-based solutions.

52 year-old Pizzey served with the Greater Manchester Police for over 30 years and was awarded a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in Her Majesty The Queen’s 2003 Birthday Honours List for his services to policing.

Indeed, Pizzey played a crucial role in saving the lives of over 80,000 people during the 1996 IRA bombings in Manchester, with his evacuation Master Plan allowing the police force to usher shoppers and staff to safety. He subsequently received the Community Police Officer of the Year Award in 2000.

Pizzey was also instrumental in establishing a radio network alert system which covered nearly 600 pubs, clubs and stores across Manchester such that businesses and the police service are now engaged in 24-hour dialogue to prevent trouble.

In addition, before ASBOs were introduced, Pizzey helped to set up exclusion orders aimed at deterring prolific thieves and criminals from targeting Manchester.

Stuart Pizzey retired from Greater Manchester Police in 2010 and then worked with a number of private security companies in a police liaison role.

Now, Pizzey will be based at The Shield Group’s Manchester offices where he’ll be working in tandem with the company’s Special Liaison Unit (headed up by Ken Stewart QPM) to identify and sustain partnerships with the police service throughout the UK, in turn supporting non-front line duties and responsibilities.

Speaking about Pizzey’s appointment, The Shield Group’s CEO John Roddy stated: “We’re delighted and very proud to welcome such a distinguished individual as Stuart Pizzey to The Shield Group.
