Dahua and GJD partnership delivers advanced detector-activated surveillance

Dahua Technology’s network video recorders (NVRs) now have a direct integration with IP-based outdoor detectors from GJD Manufacturing Limited. This integration provides end users with high quality and reliable detector-activated surveillance and monitoring.

The D-TECT IP range of detectors and Clarius PLUS IP illuminators have been integrated with Dahua’s NVR6-4KS2 range, an enterprise-level NVR providing up to 4K resolution. Its open architecture supports multi-user access and it’s compatible with ONVIF 2.4, enabling interoperability when combined with third party 4K cameras.

The NVR includes intelligent video analytics to detect people and moving objects, as well as other predetermined events, such as abandoned or missing objects, tripwire detection, people counting and facial detection.

ClariusDTECTIP

The integration was achieved by incorporating GJD’s API on a special firmware that enables the NVR to accept alarms from the detectors and link them to the recorder’s functions.

The BS 8418-compliant IP detectors are suitable for intruder monitoring, CCTV surveillance and other alarm warning requirements, providing both volumetric and long-range narrow field-of-view sensing, in addition to remote programming.

Eric Wang, head of product support for Dahua UK and Ireland, said: “We’re thrilled to have integrated our NVRs with GJD’s IP detectors, providing a professional detection and alarm monitoring solution that’s a fantastic addition to our security portfolio.”

Mark Tibbenham, GJD’s managing director, commented: “We are delighted to partner with Dahua Technology. The integration of Dahua’s surveillance products with GJD’s D-TECT IP motion detectors and Clarius illuminators will provide end users with high quality, reliable and efficient surveillance solutions.”

BSIA presents inaugural Security Business Awards to “outstanding” selection of UK companies

Six member companies of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) have been recognised at the Association’s inaugural Security Business Awards for their commitment to promoting the worldwide reputation of the industry.

The brand new awards were presented at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon 2017, held at the the Grand Connaught Rooms in central London on Wednesday 12 July. Presented in three main categories – The International Partnership Award, The Environmental Award and The Innovative Security Project of the Year Award – the Security Business Awards invited contributions from all sections of BSIA membership, with one special commendation and one overall winner being announced in each category.

“Following the success of our Security Personnel of the Year Awards, the Apprentice Installer Awards and the CVIT Special Awards for Outstanding Service, which focus solely on individuals or teams, we felt it was important to broaden the scope and ensure that the success of entire companies is also rewarded,” commented James Kelly, CEO of the BSIA. “This has also enabled us to encourage companies from outside of the guarding sector to engage with our awards programme. The nominations we received this year are a testament to the fantastic reputation of our member companies and we look forward to the ongoing success of these new awards.”

The International Partnership Award

The International Partnership Award aims to showcase the capability of the UK’s security industry in embodying the BSIA’s Export brand values of world class security innovation and experience.

BSIAAwards2017ConceptSmokeScreenThe 2017 winner in this category is Concept Smoke Screen Ltd for its partnership with established Brazilian security firm Allarmi in helping to prevent explosive attacks against ATMs in Latin America.

After one of the largest privately-owned banks in Latin America was being mercilessly targeted on an average of 40 times per month, Concept Smoke Screen Ltd worked with Allarmi to install closely-monitored security fogging systems at 1,600 branches. The impact of the systems was so dramatic that the bank has now installed them across 4,300 branches, with this solution successfully decreasing the number of attacks to a minimal amount.

Concept Smoke Screen Ltd and Allarmi have a shared value of protecting people and livelihoods, in turn leading to a successful collaboration, so much so that Allarmi now holds regular training sessions regarding the systems and has significantly expanded its network of installers.

The businesses have also founded Concept Smoke Screen Brazil Ltd in order to produce the same quality products at an affordable price and help the local market, creating new jobs in the process.

Talking about this achievement, Matt Gilmartin (managing director of Concept Smoke Screen Ltd) said: “Concept Smoke Screen Ltd is delighted to be recognised by the BSIA for its partnership work in Brazil. Although Brazil is facing significant economic challenges, the people there are determined to improve safety and security for the entire population. Concept Smoke Screen Ltd and its partner Allarmi are exceptionally proud to be part of that. Our shared beliefs have successfully produced significant loss reductions for some of the country’s and world’s largest financial institutions.”

The Special Commendation in this category was awarded to GJD Manufacturing for its work with a South East Asian international airport. GJD’s D-TECT Laser detector range helped to secure a gap above a glass wall in the arrivals area, which could have allowed objects to be thrown over before passing through security. The D-TECT Lasers have performed so well, in fact, that more have now been fitted more lasers in other areas of the airport.

The Environmental Award

The Environmental Award recognises the commitment of a security company or its employees to improve sustainability within the organisation or to improve the wider environment in its local community.

BSIAAwards2017PrintWasteThis year’s overall winner is Printwaste Recycling & Shredding who received the accolade for the installation of 384 solar panels on the roof of the company’s headquarters in order to move away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources. As well as installing the solar panels, the business also fitted light sensors in corridors, in toilets and to external lighting in order to reduce the amount of electricity being used.

The company continued to show its commitment to energy conservation by closely monitoring usage against material processed in order to assess ways in which it could reduce electricity consumption still further while increasing output.

By transforming the unused roof space into an environmental asset, the business’ electricity bill has been reduced by 51%, while annual CO2 emissions have also decreased dramatically. The commitment to the environment has also resulted in employees being more energy conscious, as well as customers being happy in the knowledge that their materials are being shredded as a result of power supplied through eco-friendly solar energy.

Don Robins, managing director of Printwaste Recycling & Shredding, enthused: “Winning this award is fantastic recognition for the business and the staff at our security shredding facility in Cheltenham. We all know that, in this day and age, it’s increasingly important for data and media products to be securely destroyed. Our operation bolsters our green credentials and gives even greater re-assurances to our clients who know that the electricity used in shredding their data and confidential papers is generated by solar panels on the Printwaste building roof.”

The Special Commendation in this category was awarded to Magenta Security Services. The business is on track to reduce its energy usage by 75% through a number of environmentally friendly initiatives. Such initiatives include changing all electronic equipment to low energy, as well as investing in environmentally friendly lighting systems throughout its offices and the installation of recycled flooring tiles.

The Innovative Security Project of the Year Award

The final award (for The Innovative Security Project of the Year) recognises projects that represent a first for the industry, a first for a particular market or a new application of an existing security solution.

BSIAAwards2017CSLCSL is the overall winner in this category, receiving the award for its CSL Connected project. Working in partnership with the industry’s leading panel manufacturers, CSL Connected combines CSL’s Critical Connectivity with the customer’s chosen alarm panel and the added option of an end user app.

Using its partnership with over 60 UK Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs), CSL Connected ensures that professional installations are not overlooked in exchange for cheaper, self-monitored solutions, combining the expertise and innovation of CSL and its manufacturer partners with end user preferences for a smart phone App and the added insurance requirement of ARC monitoring.

“Installers already have access to signalling products that provide end user Apps,” explained Rob Evans, sales director at CSL. “CSL Connected is the only product to offer smart phone Apps with reliable ARC connectivity. With end user convenience and a guaranteed response to an alarm, CSL Connected also discourages self-monitored systems that bypass ARCs.”

Evans added: “We’re delighted to win this award alongside our CSL Connected Partners. It’s testament to the hard work of each of our companies in delivering this project to the industry.”

The Special Commendation in this category was presented to Nocturna Ltd for its Sentinel range of night vision solutions, which provide crystal clear low light imagery up to 100 metres away, increasing search capabilities at night and the successful early detection of those individuals either lost or injured in low visibility scenarios. Solutions in the range provide essential support to security, military and ‘blue light’ personnel in addition to civilians worldwide.

BSIA members to showcase ‘Best of British’ at Intersec Dubai 2016

With the 18th Edition of Intersec Dubai a little over a month away, British Security Industry Association members are gearing up for what promises to be one of the industry’s biggest trade shows to date.

As the Trade Association representing the UK’s private security industry, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – through its dedicated Export Council – continues to play a pivotal role in forging productive links between UK security companies and overseas buyers (including those in the Middle East).

Intersec is deemed pivotal to this process, with the BSIA – which is attending the show for the 18th year – having a number of members on hand across the three-day event to offer valuable face-to-face advice and guidance on the latest products and services that British security businesses have to offer.

Underlining the importance of the Middle East region to member companies, the BSIA’s Export Council – a dedicated forum for BSIA member companies focused on extending their business to overseas markets – has again conducted its annual State of the Nation survey which considers global export trends.

This year’s survey revealed that there continues to be a high demand for British security products and services, with 60% of respondents citing an increase in overseas business during 2015 and a further 30% stating that the level of business had remained the same.

Further increases in overseas trade are expected for 2016, with a clear focus on the Middle East as an important market for the UK’s security sector. Almost half of all respondents identified the Middle East as the single most important target market. 80% of respondents are looking to increase their level of business in this important region during 2016.

Positive international reputation

Daren Wood, membership and export services manager at the BSIA, commented: “The UK enjoys a positive international reputation when it comes to the provision of security products and services, at least in part due to the innovation which has become synonymous with the UK’s security business sector. Over half of the respondents to this year’s State of the Nation survey attended Intersec Dubai in 2015, which reflects the clear importance that this region has for UK security exporters and the pivotal role that Intersec plays in helping UK businesses to forge productive trade links with buyers in the Middle East.”

The 2016 edition of Intersec – which takes place between 17-19 January – features a number of BSIA member companies who will be highlighting their latest products, duly taking advantage of the show’s international audience which attracted over 27,000 visitors in 2015.

BSIA members exhibiting at Intersec this year include:

Storm-AXS: Stand S1-H29 (UK Pavilion)

Storm will be revealing important new additions to its range of vandal-resistant, outdoor-rated access control keypads.

The increasing use of glass and hard decorative finishes in both corporate and retail buildings creates a unique challenge when installing access control systems. Keypads and contactless readers must be easily installed within the width of a door frame or mullion. They must also project and confirm an uncompromised commitment to quality and style.

To meet this emerging demand for innovative technology and contemporary design, Storm has created an integrated keypad and contactless reader, uniquely exploiting the use of light and form.

When installed, the new S60 keypad/reader projects an atmospheric halo of light onto surrounding surfaces, producing an exciting signature effect for landmark buildings. Intersec represents the first public showing of the new Storm-AXS S60 keypad.

Peter Jarvis, senior executive vice-president of the business, said: “Dubai is a location that features many of the world’s contemporary landmark buildings. Intersec 2016 provides a unique opportunity to establish and develop relationships with architects and building management companies. For a small British company promoting innovation in technology and quality by design, the UAE represents a market sector that values and demands premium quality solutions.”

Elmdene powers ahead at IFSEC International 2014

Electronic fire and security products manufacturer Elmdene International (a subsidiary of Potter Electric Signal, LLC) used IFSEC International 2014 (which ran from 17-19 June at London ExCeL) to unveil a record number of new product lines – from highly efficient switch mode power PSUs (Power Supply Units) for intruder alarm and fire applications through to an EN54-23:2010-compliant Fire Alarm Beacon and the groundbreaking ‘Flexi-Bell’ modular siren.

The company (which on first assessment has seen a surge in footfall year-on-year) significantly increased its profile for the 2014 exhibition by exhibiting its latest solutions on stand as part of a large-scale Harmony Village also featuring other Harmony Alliance members GJD, Texecom and TDSi.

Looking in more detail at the solutions showcased by Elmdene at IFSEC International, leading the way was an EN54-23:2010-compliant, ceiling-mounted Fire Alarm Beacon. This is an indoor ‘Type A’ VAD (Visual Alarm Device) which is built around low power consumption LED technology.

Crucially, Elmdene reports that the product has already completed a rigorous testing process to secure a certificate of approval from the LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board).

Another new concept for which Elmdene has high hopes is the company’s aptly-named ‘Flexi-Bell’ modular siren which is available in Grade 2 and Grade 3 versions. According to Elmdene, what makes this external sounder stand out from competing solutions on the market is its ability to use one common backplate with simple ‘snap in’ clips to accommodate all of Elmdene’s sounder covers: Vertec, HS and Quartz.

This not only minimises the stock that distributors need to hold but opens up the potential for customers to have their own bespoke covers in terms of shape and colour.

Switch mode PSUs for intruder alarm applications

Other industry-leading products that made their UK debut during the show included a number of new models in the GEN2 and GEN3 ranges of 12V switch mode PSUs for intruder alarm applications. The latest additions have been developed to satisfy the requirements of Grade 2 and Grade 3 under PD6662:2010 and EN50131-6:2008.

Also previewed by Elmdene at IFSEC International 2014 were the company’s cost-effective STX fire power supply units. The roll-out of the latest additions to the STX range (1A, 2A, 5A and 10A) reflects the soaring demand that Elmdene is seeing for fire-specific power supplies that satisfy the EN54-4:1997 standard.

In addition to new product launches, Elmdene once again highlighted the virtues of its ever-expanding family of switch mode PSUs, with sales proving particularly strong where CCTV applications are involved. When deployed, switch mode models offer typical efficiency levels of 80-87% and, correspondingly, lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint when compared to more conventional linear alternatives.

Given that they run significantly cooler, switch mode PSUs support enhanced reliability as well as being better equipped to cope with mains input voltage fluctuations.

Beyond this, Elmdene spotlighted the importance of Power over Ethernet (PoE) standby devices. The company has already developed two types of power supplies to bridge what it views as a worrying capability gap across security, access control and information technology applications.

Elmdene’s leadership in this field was underlined as a finalist in Benchmark magazine’s Innovation Awards 2014 (which ran in parallel to the show), with its POE1230-C model singled out for praise in the ‘Infrastructure’ category.

The POE1230-C is a PoE powered PSU (Power Supply Unit) that incorporates a battery back-up capability. Power is supplied from a 50W PoE injector to deliver 12V DC at 1.5A output.

IFSEC International 2014 “exceeded all expectations”

Commenting on Elmdene’s attendance at IFSEC 2014, Ian Moore (the company’s managing director) said: “IFSEC 2014 has exceeded all of our expectations. In fact, it has proven to be the most successful show for us yet in terms of the quality of leads and footfall. We had a much bigger, more prominent stand this time around and, thanks to our strong R&D base, an unprecedented number of product innovations, whether you are talking about PSUs or our EN54-23:2010-compliant Fire Alarm Beacon.”

Ian Moore: managing director at Elmdene International

Ian Moore: managing director at Elmdene International

Moore continued: “Co-locating with other members of the Harmony Alliance represented a major advance for us in the context of IFSEC. Undoubtedly, the benefit of being part of the Harmony Alliance is the way in which it’s focused on pulling together complementary expertise from all of our specialist fields to deliver Best of Breed integrated solutions, most notably at the project level.”

In addition, Moore explained: “The managing directors of the Harmony Alliance member companies took part in a thought-provoking panel discussion around the subject of integrated security during the first day of the show. On a lighter note, we were delighted to play host to over 300 Harmony Alliance customers at an invitation-only party held on a barge near London’s ExCel to help celebrate the success of the Alliance.”
