EN54 Part 13: Does Your Fire System Measure Up?

EN54 Part 13 is a real indicator of fire system performance, but is widely misunderstood and sometimes misrepresented. To ensure everyone can check that their fire system measures up, Advanced – one of the first companies in Europe to achieve Part 13 – has produced a new infographic that sets out the Part 13-related issues you need to be aware of as an end user of life safety systems.

EN54-13 is a European standard that ensures optimal fire system performance at all times, lives are properly protected in a real fire situation and complete peace of mind for specifiers, installers and end users.

The standard involves rigorous third party testing to prove that individual component parts will work together when combined into one system. EN54-13 is currently mandatory in several European countries, but even where not mandated, it’s a mark of system performance and reliability.

The infographic (above) explains five things you need to know about EN54-13:

(1) Approved systems are rigorously tested for compatibility

(2) Approved systems continuously check for faults

(3) ‘Designed to’ is not the same as ‘Approved to’

(4) Approved panels can save you time and money

(5) Approved systems bring ultimate peace of mind

Each of these five features are expanded upon and clearly explained in the infographic, helping to ensure system performance and integrity – and therefore peace of mind.

The infographic may be downloaded (or a printed copy ordered) from Advanced’s website at: http://www.advancedco.com/fire-systems/axis/axis-en/en54-part-13/order-infographic.aspx

Chubb Fire & Security unveils plans to develop new high performance Blackburn office site

Chubb Fire & Security is investing in a significant redevelopment programme designed to transform its Blackburn office campus into an advanced, integrated and sustainable space not only for Chubb but also the UK affiliates of Otis and Carrier.

The project – which involves the demolition of three existing Chubb buildings on the Shadsworth Business Park and the temporary relocation of employees while work is undertaken – will result in a modern, high-performance building for 500 employees operational across business support functions from all three brands.

It will also be the new home for Chubb Community Care and Chubb Systems, including its R&D and engineering teams.

Upon completion in 2016, the new building will serve as a showcase for the capabilities of all three brands.

“The new office building will be equipped with advanced solutions from Chubb Fire & Security, Otis and Carrier,” said Alastair Reynolds, managing director of Chubb Fire & Security.

“Together, as UTC Building & Industrial Systems, we’re the world leader in building solutions. This location will embody that distinction. It will be an environmentally responsible, smart and energy-efficient workplace.”

Graeme Heanan, managing director for systems at Chubb Fire & Security, will lead the development of the new facilities. Heanan told Risk UK the shared workspace is designed to result in synergies and enhanced integration among the brands.

“We’re combining our skills in designing fire and security systems, access control, building automation, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lifts with the building design expertise from our architecture and construction partners to provide a work environment that supports our employees’ well-being and productivity,” explained Heanan. “Ultimately, this will enable us to better serve our customers.”

Kate Hollern, leader of Blackburn and Darwen District Council, enthused: “It’s a major investment by a global business and means a long-term commitment to the Borough with all that entails, including new jobs for residents. It also shows the confidence that industry-leading brands such as Chubb have in deciding to make our Borough their home.”

Hollern added: “We’ve worked closely with Chubb to secure this deal which underscores the Council’s commitment to collaborating with members of the business community in order to deliver wider prosperity both now and in the future.”

Craig Forbes, finance director at Chubb Fire & Security, stated: “After two years of planning, we’re delighted to confirm our commitment to the redevelopment of the Chubb campus in Blackburn. Our new, high-performance building will benefit not only our employees but, with the integration of some of our back office operations across Chubb, Otis and Carrier it will also help to build a foundation that actively supports the continued growth of UTC Building & Industrial Systems in the UK.”

Construction work on the new facilities is expected to begin later this year.

*Chubb (a leading provider of security and life safety solutions), Otis (the world’s largest maintainer of people-moving products) and Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions are all part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp (NYSE:UTX)
