Kentec provides fire protection for Yorkshire Power Station project

A Sigma XT extinguishing panel and accessories manufactured by Kentec, the life safety control systems manufacturer, are protecting a power storage station built in Hefei, China and then brought over to Yorkshire.

The Guangzhou Wanzhen Information Technology Co Ltd completed the installation and commissioning of the project for Sungrow Power in Hefei earlier this year, after which it was transported to Yorkshire, where the storage container was fixed to the site. The storage station forms part of Sungrow’s photovoltaic solar energy project.

From construction to installation, the project was completed in just four months, with the methodology now being used as a blueprint across the power construction industry.

The installation included a Sigma XT Extinguishant panel, status unit, abort switch and warning signs. A spokesperson for the Guangzhou Wanzhen Information Technology Co Ltd has stated the Sigma range is ideal for high-risk sites such as power stations. “Kentec’s Sigma range is highly reliable and renowned throughout the industry for its robust build quality. We were very happy to specify the system for this project.”

Three initiation circuits are included as standard with the Sigma XT releasing panel. This means release can be configured to activate from any combination of detection zone inputs to enable specific and controlled activations, thus protecting a site’s critical equipment from unnecessary extinguishant release damage.

Kevin Swann, managing director of Kentec, observed: “A large LED display provides a highly-intuitive interface for end users to configure systems to suit their specific sites. With all of the electronics mounted on a single, easily removable steel plate, the panels are both robust and easy to install.”

The LED display informs on the time remaining until release for added user safety. This countdown timer can be duplicated on up to seven status units per panel to provide localised indication of system status. Any number of abort switches can be connected to the abort terminal, in turn providing complete convenience of system design.

The Sigma XT has been approved and certified to EN 12094-1, EN 54-2 and EN 54-4, with UL and FM versions also available.

Kentec set to showcase latest UL-approved Taktis fire panel at Intersec

Life safety control systems manufacturer Kentec is showing its UL-approved, next generation Taktis UL 16-loop analogue addressable fire panel on Stand 4-A24 at Intersec 2019 alongside a suite of extinguishant panels and accessories designed to make end user customers’ lives easier.

The Taktis UL 16L extends the current Taktis UL fire panel to provide up to 144 zone indications. It supports more than 2,000 detection devices and can network up to 128 panels, making it ideal for the largest sites such as Data Centres, schools, hospitals, multi-site retail outlets/supermarkets, critical infrastructure and major commercial and industrial facilities. The panel has been approved by UL to UL-864 10th Edition.

Exhibited for the first time is the Fire-Cryer Plus voice sounder and visual indicator. An accessory to the Sigma XT, Sigma XT+ and Syncro XT+ extinguishing control panels, the solution provides clear and concise messaging to building occupants as an alternative to electronic sounders/bells and strobes. System-specific messages are provided including first stage alarm, second stage alarm, gas release imminent and gas release confirmation as well as hold button activation.

KentecTaktisULRed

Also on display will be the Ockular software solution, providing building managers with complete control over fire detection and monitoring. Ockular software enables the creation of a 2D site map of any site or building to monitor fire safety and detection, and automatically switches to an area where a fire device has been activated to allow immediate viewing and investigation of an event.

Visitors will also see how Vizulinx, a sophisticated yet easy-to-use fire alarm management solution, enables building managers and service providers to monitor fire systems remotely while also being able to integrate with other systems (such as Building Management Systems, for example). It passes on the detail of fire system events via e-mail and SMS message format using a standard IP connection. Integration with other systems is achievable via Modbus or BacNET protocols.

Kevin Swann, managing director of Kentec, stated: “Intersec will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase how our systems are helping to protect sites within a wide variety of sectors in the Middle East and globally. With the Taktis UL 16L, our panels have the capability to protect the very largest sites and infrastructures. Our suite of complementary products, including Fire-Cryer, Vizulinx and Ockular demonstrates that the customer is at the centre of everything we do. It’s our job to ensure fire safety is made as efficient, practical and effective as possible for our customers.”

Chiron’s IRIS Touch 4-NG Series certified to EN 54-21/CPR for fire detection systems

Chiron Security Communications has been awarded the highest standard accreditation of EN 54-21/Construction Products Regulation (CPR) for the entire IRIS Touch 4-NG Series, the company’s high-end alarm over IP diallers.

Adopting a strict quality management policy, Chiron has always been at the forefront of obtaining approvals – such as EN and VdS – for its products.

This latest accreditation is of major importance to the company in terms of new market segment development, and will enable Chiron to assist its customers towards better and easier compliance with insurers’ regulations.

ChironIRISTouch4NGSeries

The EN 54-21 European Standard specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria against which the effectiveness and reliability of routing equipment capable of transmitting fire alarm and/or fault warning signals for use with fire detection and fire alarm systems installed in buildings can be assessed.

The routing equipment is designed to allow the system to function in accordance with the requirements of this European Standard. It also provides for the evaluation of conformity of the equipment to the requirements outlined in the document.

To be compliant with the CPR, products always need to be tested while connected to a panel such that it can be proven they’re communicating. The IRIS Touch 4-NG Series has been tested as part of an overall fire system and approved to EN 54-21 throughout Europe for the fire market.

IRIS Touch 4-NG Series fire panel integration

Traditionally, the signalling for fire alarms has only been applied to two events: ‘Fire’ or ‘Fault’. However, this scenario provided very little information for Monitoring Centre operators in terms of the best way in which to action/escalate an alarm event.

Most fire panels can generate a great deal more information (eg identify that a sensor is activated, and in what zone) on a local serial port. This is normally done in a panel-specific manner with the protocols differing from one manufacturer to another, and therefore not in a format recognised by the Monitoring Centre operators.

For some time now, IRIS Touch diallers have supported the serial ‘ESPA’ pager protocol interface which many fire panels offer and use to signal such additional information. The IRIS Touch dialler converts the ESPA messages from the panel into standard SIA format and sends these to the Monitoring Centre with additional information to the ‘Fire’ or ‘Fault’ signal.

This concept has been extended in the V2.14 firmware of the IRIS Touch NG range so that serial event messages generated by Honeywell Notifier and HHL fire panels can be handled in the same way and converted to standard SIA format for the Monitoring Centre.

Chiron’s CEO Willem Harthoorn stated: “Chiron recognised the fire sector’s requirement for reliable alarm over IP transmission. On that basis, we invested significantly in both development and applicable certification for our IRIS Touch 4-NG Series. These efforts have already resulted in us winning a major project in Germany. We will continue to implement serial fire panel protocols when we’re asked to do so.”
