BSIA Chairman’s Awards honour outstanding contributions to the security world

Pauline Norstrom – the newly-elected chairman of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – has personally recognised the significant contributions made by five individuals and organisations to the ongoing success of the UK’s private security sector.

Presenting the 2014 Chairman’s Awards during the Association’s Annual Luncheon at the London Hilton, Park Lane on Wednesday 16 July, Norstrom selected winners in the following categories: Contribution to Exporting, Contribution to Standards, Contribution to Training, Contribution to the Community and Promoting the Industry.

Contribution to Exporting: Ian Moore (Elmdene)

The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Exporting was presented to Ian Moore of Elmdene. With an export career spanning 20 years, Moore has made a positive contribution to the international growth of a number of businesses.

In 2003, he founded Detector Technologies and oversaw the company’s growth from a start-up to becoming an international business with offices in the UK, Australia, Dubai and South Africa all in just six years.

A long-term contributor to the BSIA’s Export Council, Moore’s expertise continues to help new exporters gain a foothold in overseas markets.

Contribution to Standards: Robbie Calder (Broadland Guarding)

The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Standards was presented to Robbie Calder of Broadland Guarding, who was recognised for his contributions to the development of training standards requirements for Security Industry Authority licenses relating to CCTV operators.

As the main BSIA representative on many revisions of BS 7958 (CCTV Management and Operations) and BS 8523 (Management and Operation of Warden Schemes), Calder has continued to promote Best Practice and improve quality of service delivery in these areas.

As chairman of the BSIA’s Police and Public Services Section, Calder has also represented the Association at various Parliamentary round table meetings, ensuring that our industry’s capabilities are both recognised and respected.

Contribution to Training: PHS Group Training Department/PHS Datashred

The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Training was presented to PHS Group Training Department/PHS Datashred in recognition of the organisation’s efforts to develop recognised training schemes for the Information Destruction Sector.

As the first organisation in the UK to be awarded accreditation from Skills for Security for Information Destruction Operations, PHS Datashred has worked together with the wider PHS Group’s Training Department to develop an in-house training course designed to further enhance the quality of service provided to customers and the wider public alike.

Contribution to the Community: David Bone (Securitas Security Services)

The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to the Community was presented to David Bone of Securitas Security Services who, as an active member of the organisation’s Community Team since 2008, has dedicated countless hours to the company’s fundraising and community events programmes.

Bone’s contributions have made a difference to various local and national charities, including the Poppy Appeal and St Theresa’s Hospice, with events raising over £31,000 in total.

Organising security for charity events, as well as celebrity appearances, are key elements of Bone’s contributions, and he pledges to “continue to build and maintain excellent community links while encouraging others to take part in delivering the Securitas Community Spirit.”

Promoting The Industry: Simon Banks (CSL DualCom)

Finally, the Chairman’s Award for Promoting the Industry was presented to Simon Banks of CSL Dualcom for his fantastic work on the 100 in 100 Apprenticeship initiative.

A driving force behind the success of the annual scheme (which aims to place 100 new security apprentices in the sector in just 100 days), Banks has been instrumental in its success, which has so far seen over 1,800 young people placed in security careers. These new recruits have included installers, engineers, technicians, customer service personnel and locksmiths.

Inspired by his own experiences as an apprentice, Banks believes that the continued recruitment of young people into the security sector is crucial for maintaining the industry’s professionalism while also helping to avoid a potential skills gap in a few years’ time.

Commitment to enhancing the quality of UK security

Speaking about the Chairman’s Awards, Pauline Norstrom said: “It’s a great pleasure that one of my first tasks as chairman of the BSIA is to recognise and reward the significant and lasting contributions made by these dedicated individuals and companies. Their commitment to improving the reputation and quality of our industry is admirable, and I shall look forward to building further on these achievements in my next two years as BSIA chairman.”

Elmdene powers ahead at IFSEC International 2014

Electronic fire and security products manufacturer Elmdene International (a subsidiary of Potter Electric Signal, LLC) used IFSEC International 2014 (which ran from 17-19 June at London ExCeL) to unveil a record number of new product lines – from highly efficient switch mode power PSUs (Power Supply Units) for intruder alarm and fire applications through to an EN54-23:2010-compliant Fire Alarm Beacon and the groundbreaking ‘Flexi-Bell’ modular siren.

The company (which on first assessment has seen a surge in footfall year-on-year) significantly increased its profile for the 2014 exhibition by exhibiting its latest solutions on stand as part of a large-scale Harmony Village also featuring other Harmony Alliance members GJD, Texecom and TDSi.

Looking in more detail at the solutions showcased by Elmdene at IFSEC International, leading the way was an EN54-23:2010-compliant, ceiling-mounted Fire Alarm Beacon. This is an indoor ‘Type A’ VAD (Visual Alarm Device) which is built around low power consumption LED technology.

Crucially, Elmdene reports that the product has already completed a rigorous testing process to secure a certificate of approval from the LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board).

Another new concept for which Elmdene has high hopes is the company’s aptly-named ‘Flexi-Bell’ modular siren which is available in Grade 2 and Grade 3 versions. According to Elmdene, what makes this external sounder stand out from competing solutions on the market is its ability to use one common backplate with simple ‘snap in’ clips to accommodate all of Elmdene’s sounder covers: Vertec, HS and Quartz.

This not only minimises the stock that distributors need to hold but opens up the potential for customers to have their own bespoke covers in terms of shape and colour.

Switch mode PSUs for intruder alarm applications

Other industry-leading products that made their UK debut during the show included a number of new models in the GEN2 and GEN3 ranges of 12V switch mode PSUs for intruder alarm applications. The latest additions have been developed to satisfy the requirements of Grade 2 and Grade 3 under PD6662:2010 and EN50131-6:2008.

Also previewed by Elmdene at IFSEC International 2014 were the company’s cost-effective STX fire power supply units. The roll-out of the latest additions to the STX range (1A, 2A, 5A and 10A) reflects the soaring demand that Elmdene is seeing for fire-specific power supplies that satisfy the EN54-4:1997 standard.

In addition to new product launches, Elmdene once again highlighted the virtues of its ever-expanding family of switch mode PSUs, with sales proving particularly strong where CCTV applications are involved. When deployed, switch mode models offer typical efficiency levels of 80-87% and, correspondingly, lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint when compared to more conventional linear alternatives.

Given that they run significantly cooler, switch mode PSUs support enhanced reliability as well as being better equipped to cope with mains input voltage fluctuations.

Beyond this, Elmdene spotlighted the importance of Power over Ethernet (PoE) standby devices. The company has already developed two types of power supplies to bridge what it views as a worrying capability gap across security, access control and information technology applications.

Elmdene’s leadership in this field was underlined as a finalist in Benchmark magazine’s Innovation Awards 2014 (which ran in parallel to the show), with its POE1230-C model singled out for praise in the ‘Infrastructure’ category.

The POE1230-C is a PoE powered PSU (Power Supply Unit) that incorporates a battery back-up capability. Power is supplied from a 50W PoE injector to deliver 12V DC at 1.5A output.

IFSEC International 2014 “exceeded all expectations”

Commenting on Elmdene’s attendance at IFSEC 2014, Ian Moore (the company’s managing director) said: “IFSEC 2014 has exceeded all of our expectations. In fact, it has proven to be the most successful show for us yet in terms of the quality of leads and footfall. We had a much bigger, more prominent stand this time around and, thanks to our strong R&D base, an unprecedented number of product innovations, whether you are talking about PSUs or our EN54-23:2010-compliant Fire Alarm Beacon.”

Moore continued: “Co-locating with other members of the Harmony Alliance represented a major advance for us in the context of IFSEC. Undoubtedly, the benefit of being part of the Harmony Alliance is the way in which it’s focused on pulling together complementary expertise from all of our specialist fields to deliver Best of Breed integrated solutions, most notably at the project level.”

In addition, Moore explained: “The managing directors of the Harmony Alliance member companies took part in a thought-provoking panel discussion around the subject of integrated security during the first day of the show. On a lighter note, we were delighted to play host to over 300 Harmony Alliance customers at an invitation-only party held on a barge near London’s ExCel to help celebrate the success of the Alliance.”

Elmdene to illuminate IFSEC International 2014 with innovative EN54-23 compliant Fire Alarm Beacon

Electronic fire and security products developer Elmdene International (a subsidiary of Potter Electric Signal, LLC) is bringing to market an EN54-23:2010 compliant, ceiling-mounted Fire Alarm Beacon.

The indoor ‘Type A’ VAD (Visual Alarm Device), which will be on show at IFSEC International 2014 (ExCeL London, 17-19 June) – running alongside FIREX International – is built around low power consumption LED technology and, crucially, has already completed a rigorous testing process to secure a certificate of approval from the LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board).

Looking in more detail at the standout features of the LPCB-approved beacon, it has an input power range of 18-30V DC (24V DC nominal) which is not only used to power the device but also to synchronise multiple devices, avoiding issues associated with epilepsy.

In addition, having the same coverage as a standard smoke detector (15 m) it offers the installer a simple design method by matching these devices within an area – vitally important in these early stages of implementation.

The new Fire Alarm Beacon (FBC100-3-15) provides coverage in line with EN54-23 to C-3-15, which means it’s a ceiling device with a maximum ceiling height of 3 m, providing a 15 m diameter cylindrical volume covered by the light radiated from the built-in strobe.

The rationale for Elmdene adopting the C-3-15 configuration is, the company confirms, to ensure that the design of an EN54-23 compliant solution is as straightforward as possible.
For smaller areas or where current consumption may be limited there is added flexibility to switch the beacon to C-3-12 coverage if required (from 15 m to 12 m), in turn reducing the device’s current consumption by 10 mA.

Making life easier for specifiers and installers

“We’re delighted that our Fire Alarm Beacon has just achieved LPCB approval in line with EN54-23,” stated Ian Moore, managing director at Elmdene International. “In fact, during testing it actually surpassed our claimed C-3-15 coverage.”

Moore continued: “Basically, with the Fire Alarm Beacon we are keen to make life easier for specifiers and installers when it comes to deciding how many strobes they should fit to satisfy the minimum light coverage requirements of EN54-23. This cannot be done with ‘Open Class’ strobes as every manufacturer’s strobe coverage could be different. The reality is that this is still proving to be a challenge as the industry becomes acquainted with the standard. In my view, anything that can address this situation has to be welcomed.”

In addition to meeting the requirements of EN54-23:2010, the Fire Alarm Beacon is ROHS compliant, CE marked and comes complete with a three-year warranty.

BSIA members to showcase latest innovations at IFSEC International 2014

Members of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) are looking forward to showcasing the very latest in innovative security technology before an impressive audience of international buyers and specifiers as IFSEC International makes its return to London next week (17-19 June).

The show’s relocation to London’s ExCeL has enabled exhibition organiser UBM Live to rejuvenate the show’s format, with the introduction of new features and opportunities for networking both during the show and after hours.

Learning, education and training still form a key element of the event’s format, with many BSIA spokespeople scheduled to take part in keynote sessions as part of the IFSEC Academy Conference Programme.

Meanwhile, several members of the BSIA’s Lone Worker Section will be showcasing the latest safety devices and smart phone apps at Safety and Health Expo, which runs alongside IFSEC International as part of UBM’s wider Protection and Management Series. There’s free entry to all IFSEC ticket-holders.
