Delta Security installs integrated security solution at Grasmere Primary School

Delta Security – a specialist in automated, high-security solutions – has installed an integrated access control and IP-based HD CCTV system at Grasmere Primary School to enhance security for students and streamline access for teachers and visitors.

Local to Delta Security, the Hackney-based school had been relying on security systems and processes that were not integrated. Large numbers of keys were required for the safe management of the school.

Nick Mallender, head teacher at Grasmere Primary School, stated: “The organisation of the keys and systems gave our site manager additional work and avoidable stress.”

Access control system

Delta Security specified a Salto access control system that enables school officials to print colour photograph ID cards that also work as access control cards. Each ID access card is programmed according to the employee or visitors’ access authorisation and ID cards can be deleted at the touch of a button should they be lost or stolen.

Working hand-in-hand with the access control ID card system is an IP-based HD CCTV system that provides visual confirmation of who has accessed the site and when.

“It has transformed security on the site,” observed Mallender. “In addition to knowing who on site is meant to be there, we can also protect our confidential documents by restricting access to their location. The CCTV is also much more comprehensive, giving us access to high-quality footage when required.”

Delta Security pre-issued ID cards to employees before works began at the end of the school holidays. Essential to Mallender was ensuring the chosen system was user-friendly. “When implementing change that affects all staff and visitors it’s vital that everyone feels comfortable with how it all works. Dave Mundy, Delta’s managing director, gave comprehensive training and I’m confident that everyone can take ownership of the new system.”

BSIA security systems guide published to help education sector officials ‘raise the alarm’

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has issued a free guide to aid key decision-makers within the education sector when it comes to understanding the benefits of installing intruder alarms and other security systems in order to safeguard schools.

Schools and other educational establishments face a number of security threats year round, including vandalism, arson attack and trespassers. As such, school officials have a Duty of Care to ensure that staff and student welfare is always a top priority, as well as a requirement to protect high value goods like IT equipment, personal possessions and confidential personal and financial data.

“It’s essential that key decision-makers are taking security seriously and making the necessary arrangements to protect their premises from both internal and external threats,” explained Martin Harvey, chairman of the BSIA’s Security Systems Section. “The installation of high quality intruder alarms and their integration with other security systems, such as access control and CCTV, can provide vital peace of mind that the site is being protected both in and out of school hours. With such a wide variety of products on the market, as a BSIA Section we felt it was necessary to create a helpful and concise guide to inform decision-makers of the benefits of different security systems.”

Earlier this year, the BSIA surveyed members of its Security Systems Section in order to discover their involvement in securing the education sector over the previous year. While 50% of respondents felt that the use of private security measures in the education sector had increased over the previous 12 months, 67% anticipated them increasing over the next 12 months. 67% of respondents also felt that awareness of safety and security among education professionals had remained the same in the previous year.

The new guide endeavours to highlight the benefits of installing intruder alarms and other security systems, showcasing their effectiveness in not only responding to known threats, but also in deterring criminal activity.

Recently, the BSIA also commissioned a White Paper entitled ‘The (Real) Price of Security Solutions’ on the challenges of buying and selling high quality security solutions. The document aims to explore the price versus quality debate from the perspectives of both buyers and sellers of security solutions in order to identify the relative advantages and disadvantages between low-priced and high quality solutions.

The main findings of the White Paper clearly suggest that end users would find it far more beneficial to consider and deploy high quality security solutions. In terms of intruder alarms, a high quality solution would be one that meets with all the necessary requirements to ensure an effective police response.

“There are many standards that intruder alarm systems and their installers must meet in order to ensure that good quality products and services are available for end users,” explained Harvey. “The new guide serves to highlight the essential standards with which systems should comply in order to make them truly ‘fit for purpose’.”

Genetec introduces new subscription-based ownership model for Security Center

Changing business model

A recent Gartner industry report noted that, by 2020, more than 80% of software vendors will change their business model from traditional license and maintenance to subscription, regardless of whether the software resides on-premises or in the cloud.

Along with the flexibility and affordability of a subscription model, the Gartner report finds that the value of short-term predictability trumps long-term costs, particularly when the ease of adding or relinquishing licenses is included in the picture.

The subscription model also moves the purchases from capital expenditure (CAPEX) to operational expenditure (OPEX). This enables customers who are looking to upgrade their systems to Security Center to do so from operational budgets allocated to their older, less capable security software.

A good fit for smaller sites, Security Center Compact systems can also be linked to larger systems through the Genetec Federation feature, allowing for centralised monitoring (as seen with city-wide surveillance and multi-site businesses or campuses).

The Compact edition features all of the camera integrations available in the enterprise edition of the software such that customers can choose the vendors they want to work with and design a system that best suits their business.

In addition to providing smaller site video surveillance, Security Center Compact offers a clear path as an organisation’s security needs evolve over time. Security Center Compact end users can simply update their subscription and purchase a higher edition of Security Center as their system grows, in turn avoiding the need to install and/or re-deploy new system software.

ASSA Abloy Access Control’s latest Aperio wireless cylinders, PINpad escutcheon and L100 – dubbed the “world’s first complete wireless security lock” – have all been integrated within the latest Software House access control system.
