Hikvision has been awarded Cyber Essentials Plus status – the highest accreditation in the programme. Operated by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the Cyber Essentials scheme is an independently assessed accreditation supported by the Government. The scheme is designed to carry out rigorous testing of Internet-enabled products connected to a given company’s infrastructure – in this case that of Hikvision – in order to ensure that, when connected to a network, those products are safe, secure and don’t provide a risk to devices on the rest of the network.
In partnership with five independent test houses, the Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation process covers a number of different areas to ensure users of Internet-enabled devices are assured of the highest level of protection against potential cyber threats and attacks. These independent test houses assess products through internal testing and vulnerability scanning. Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation is only awarded when testers are fully satisfied that the tested products don’t pose a risk to the wider network.
“Cyber security is really hot topic in the security industry so naturally we’re delighted to have been awarded Cyber Essentials Plus status,” explained Gary Harmer, sales director for Hikvision UK and Ireland. “As the only manufacturer in our industry to have received this level of accreditation, it’s confirmation of the confidence we at Hikvision have in our own operations.”
Hikvision will continue to work with the NCSC and other authorised bodies to maintain, develop and enhance the security of its products, operating environments and processes.

CDVI UK has announced the company’s successful accreditation to the Cyber Essentials security standards. Cyber Essentials is a Government-backed and industry-supported scheme designed to help organisations protect themselves against common online threats. This set of basic technical controls assists organisations in protecting themselves against common online security threats.
This certification is consistent with the continual desire of CDVI UK to offer secured solutions and products.
CDVI UK has been working with Luke Hargreaves, managing director at Cloud Smart Solutions, to secure the company’s IT network against cyber attacks. The business now has up-to-date and operative cyber security measures in place.
The latest update of the ATRIUM web-based access control to General Data Protection Regulation standards shows that CDVI’s product development is fully connected to the latest trends in the security industry.
The CDVI Group develops products ranging from biometric and online access control solutions through to electromagnetic locking, keypads, stand-alone entrance systems and door automation.
Helping security buyers and installers to navigate the complex world of cyber security is the aim of a forthcoming event organised by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). Supported by the Fire Industry Association (FIA), the event takes place in Solihull on Wednesday 4 October.
This free-to-attend, half-day gathering will include presentations from a wide range of cyber security experts and offer a particular focus on the potential vulnerabilities of ‘connected products’ – meaning any security product (ie intruder alarms, video surveillance systems and access control) that could be accessed or operated remotely via the Internet – and how these vulnerabilities can be combated.
Delegates will be informed about the potential cyber risks facing their business, with presentations from the West Midlands Police digital cyber crime team and an engaging and surprising demonstration from the Scottish Business Resilience Centre’s team of ‘ethical hackers’.
Attendees will also find out how they can combat the cyber threats they face, with presentations outlining the benefits of the Government’s Cyber Essentials accreditation and introducing the BSIA’s ongoing work in the field of cyber security.
Finally, delegates will benefit from a summary of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is set to come into force in early 2018.
The event is open to security and fire solutions buyers and installers, or indeed anybody from either industry with an interest in improving their business’ cyber security and data protection policies.

Hanwha Techwin Europe has been certified as being compliant with the UK Government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme. Administered by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the industry-supported scheme is designed to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber attacks.
The certificate awarded to Hanwha Techwin Europe verifies that the business has procedures in place specifically designed to minimise the threat of an attack on the IT infrastructure at the company’s headquarters in Chertsey, Surrey and extends to cover laptops used by field-based employees.
“We’re constantly evaluating and updating our IT security in order to negate the risk of any disruption to our business or our business partners,” said Bob Hwang, managing director of Hanwha Techwin Europe. “Our cyber security programme is a key element of our ‘We Move With Trust’ philosophy and reflects the proactive stance we’re taking to protect confidential data.”

Oxford University, in association with the London Digital Security Centre (LDSC), will be looking at the challenges faced by SMEs and their importance to the economy as a supply chain link to larger companies and Government in order to produce an academic White Paper entitled ‘Developing Security Education and Awareness Programmes for SMEs’ for publication this coming November.
The White Paper will provide an overall review of the LDSC’s approach and effectiveness on security education for SMEs. This work will provide recommendations for assessing the effectiveness of such programmes in future and the LDSC’s specifically.
Providing education and training for this sector is crucial in order to ensure that cyber security capacity measures (such as ‘10 Steps to Cyber Security – Cyber Essentials’) are actually implemented. This White paper will explore current offerings on cyber security education and training for SMEs and identify the existing gaps.
Drafted by Dr Maria Bada and Dr Jason Nurse, the authors have already published similar work on the effectiveness of cyber security awareness raising. This new White Paper will build on previous knowledge and expertise using interviews and focus groups to collect information.
Dr Bada commented: “Our aim is to review the London Digital Security Centre’s approach to security education for SMEs and the motivation for this initiative. We will critically reflect on the effectiveness of the LDSC’s approach thus far. Our methodology is based on qualitative and quantitative data.”
The LDSC has already recognised the challenges that SMEs face when it comes to cyber security and is helping businesses to embrace digital innovations and operate in a secure online environment such that they protect themselves against cyber criminals.
John Unsworth, CEO at the LDSC, concluded: “Our role is to help improve the security posture of SMEs operating in London. It’s vital we understand their motivation and the issues they face to ensure the training and advice we give is implemented. This is particularly important given that over 1,000 SMEs in London report a digital crime to Action Fraud every month.”
