Zaun develops SR3 fencing for Critical National Infrastructure applications

A high-security fence for rail and other Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) applications that resists sustained attack with specialist power tools for more than five minutes has been developed by steel mesh fencing manufacturer Zaun.

Zaun has received a revised Certificate of Product Approval from the Loss Prevention Certification Board to include its brand new CorruSec SR3 approved to Security Rating 3. The fencing system incorporates corrugated HiSec 3-5-10 mesh sandwiched between further panels of HiSec 3-5-10, a special welded steel wire fence panel similar to the type of mesh usually used for prison fencing, whose name is derived from its mesh size: 3″ × 0.5″ × 10 gauge.

The original concept was the idea of Zaun co-founder and director Alastair Henman and has been developed by R&D manager Adam Christie. Christie explained: “Alastair conceived the design by looking at the construction of cardboard, in particular the corrugated kind and how the corrugated element created a much stronger three-dimensional material. We started experimenting with a corrugated mesh centre section to give fencing greater rigidity and increase its thickness without adding much to the material content and weight in order to counter the kind of tools attackers might use.”

CorruSec SR3 has been subjected to sustained attack by testers from the Building Research Establishment wielding a range of hand and power tools, yet they couldn’t breach the CorruSec SR3 in less than five minutes.

The fencing system is manufactured to BS 1722 Part 14 and is approved at heights from 2.4 metres to 6 metres above the ground, in ground or base-plated options.

Each individual panel features a 76.2 mm x 12.7 mm mesh configuration with 3 mm horizontal and vertical wires. The corrugated section is pressed to approximately 100 mm in depth. All three layers are bolted together using bolts fixed into place in a grid pattern throughout the combined fence panel.

CorruSec SR3 provides good through visibility for use with CCTV cameras, while security toppings can be added to suit.

Alastair Henman explained: “The current specification for CrossRail stations is a ‘5-minute fence’, so we set about seeing if we could create a viable product. Across our customer base, operators of CNI are upgrading their most sensitive sites given  the heightened fear of terrorist threats and advances in technology.”

As well as rail applications, SR3 fencing is ideal for protecting assets at water utilities, oil and gas compounds, Data Centres and other CNI sites.

Five control panels, 31 alarm units

In the Cygnus family there are a choice of five control panels and 31 alarm units and accessories, all illustrated with their details on the website. A CYG6 control panel has recently been introduced to cater for smaller construction sites, handling 32 alarm devices in a single zone. There’s also a control panel available with a GSM modem allowing reporting via SMS text messaging.

Another innovation is a PIR option available on all alarm modules to detect intruders and alert off-site personnel for added safety protection.

The Cygnus fire alarm system has an impressive capability of linking up to 480 units across a construction site. Individual units may be either a fire alarm Call Point, First Aid alert point, smoke detector, heat detector or a combined Call Point/First Aid alert alarm. Further capabilities include out-of-hours notifications via an auto-dialling panel to key-holders.

Cygnus has been specifically designed for use in dense concrete and steel structured buildings, and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in use. Particular attention has been given to achieving an extremely long range connection. Operational distances in excess of 1.5 km have been recorded in an open air environment.

Cygnus covers impressive distances due to a meshing system which allows devices to communicate through one another and not directly to the panel.

Advanced consolidates transport sector credentials by joining Rail Industry Fire Association

Global fire systems business Advanced has recently become a member of the Rail Industry Fire Association (RIFA), reinforcing the company’s credentials in the transport sector.

Olympic Games fencing supplier Zaun called in to protect London Underground construction project

London Underground has once again turned to high-security fencing systems supplier Zaun to protect one of its sites during important construction works.

Zaun has supplied MultiFence – a temporary, high-security fencing and gate system it developed specifically for the London 2012 Games – to help safeguard the £1 billion upgrade of Tottenham Court Road London Underground station.

MultiFence was used previously as hoardings to provide access while protecting construction works at nearby St Paul’s station, at Kings Cross station and also at the famous Bull Ring complex in central Birmingham.

Zaun became synonymous with temporary security fencing when it installed the 20 km boundary to the main Olympic Park, which included some intriguing 7.5 metre-high parapet fencing alongside the adjacent railway line, with a further 1.5 km of fencing providing a ‘ring-within-a-ring’ around the Olympic Stadium itself.

Crossrail and Transport for London are jointly redeveloping the existing 100 years-old tube station at Tottenham Court Road and building a new station, which is expected to be completed by 2016-2017.

The work is at the intersection of Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road. The existing London Underground station handles 150,000 passengers per day, a figure forecast to increase to 200,000 per day when Crossrail comes on stream.

Key journey times will be reduced from Tottenham Court Road station to other stations including Canary Wharf (from 21 minutes down to 12 minutes), Ealing Broadway (27 minutes to 12 minutes) and Heathrow (53 minutes to 28 minutes).

The new, four-storey station will feature a Ticket Hall at Dean Street, three new station entrances, step-free access, additional escalators to access Northern Line platforms, a public piazza, access to the Northern and Central Line platforms and a western station box.
