Further enhancements to the CEM hardware range include support for the CEM Systems S700 Exit Reader as an extension to the CEM Systems emerald intelligent access terminal, providing a similar look, feel and user experience across bi-directional doors.

CEM Systems helps Belfast International Airport enhance security for G8 Summit

CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products, worked together with long-standing customer Belfast International Airport to increase security during the G8 Summit.

The G8 is made up of world leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the USA and the UK. The EU is represented by the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council.

The 2013 G8 Summit was held at Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, on 17 and 18 June and resulted in a significant increase in visitor numbers to Northern Ireland.

As Northern Ireland’s largest airport, it was imperative for Belfast International Airport that security was maintained at the highest standard.

Already having CEM S3020 portable access control readers on site as part of the existing CEM AC2000 access control system, the airport’s management chose to increase the number of portable readers to ensure maximum security throughout this busy time.

CEM portable readers enable on-site airport security staff to validate access control cards at remote parts of the site or areas with no mains power supply, and they can also be used for random checks.

Highest levels of security demanded

“The G8 was of great significance to Belfast International Airport,” said Suzanne Blair, security manager at Belfast International Airport.

“It was important that we provided the highest levels of security throughout the airport to ensure the safety of all our customers, and also that we kept disruption for travellers to a minimum. Installing additional CEM portable readers alongside our existing readers allowed us to do just this. The CEM portable readers were ideal in enabling us to conduct random security checks and to establish short term access check points in additional areas.”

Andrew Fulton, senior director of global sales at CEM Systems, commented: “CEM Systems access control software and hardware solutions have long been used by airports to ensure the highest levels of security. We’re delighted to have worked closely with Belfast International Airport during this significant time to ensure that the highest levels of security were maintained for the site and for Northern Ireland.”
