Tavcom Training and Banham Academy offer BTEC Level 3 training pathway to Trailblazer apprentices

Tavcom Training has partnered with the Banham Academy to provide a professional training pathway for apprentices on the new Trailblazer scheme. The Trailblazer apprenticeship standard for the fire, security and emergency systems industry is approved by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Now, Banham Academy and Tavcom Training are going further with the inclusion of professional qualifications.

The BTEC Level 3 courses developed by Tavcom Training deliver comprehensive security training during the three-year apprenticeship through a combination of online and classroom teaching, practical exercises, assessments and examinations.

Paul Tennent CTSP, executive director at Tavcom Training, stated: “Working in partnership with the Banham Academy, we’re ensuring that apprentices gain an essential understanding of theory combined with practical industry experience to kick-start their careers. Meanwhile, the security industry benefits from a steady stream of fully-trained and qualified engineers at the end of the process.”

The first cohort of Banham Academy Trailblazer apprentices has already embarked on the BTEC Level 3 training pathway. Kevin Faulkner, the Banham Academy’s operations director, explained: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Tavcom Training to ensure quality materials and practices are available to support the delivery of our apprenticeships. Achieving the Tavcom qualifications is a great way to measure the progress of our learners, while the accreditation provided motivates them on the pathway towards completing their apprenticeship. ”

Paul Tennent concluded: “We’re proud to be supporting young engineers and helping to bring new and fully-qualified talent to the sector. We also believe it’s vital that, ultimately, all Trailblazer participants have a level playing field on which to compete. Our aim is to raise standards in general across the scheme.”

100 in 100 2014: creating new apprenticeships for UK security

The official launch of 100 in 100 2014 – the fourth annual drive to energise more brand new apprenticeships across the security world – took place at a special presentation held in the IFSECGlobal.com Centre Stage Theatre at IFSEC International 2014 on Wednesday 18 June.

100 in 100 aims to energise 100 or more new apprenticeships in the UK security sector within a 100-day timeline starting at IFSEC International 2014 (which ran from 17-19 June at ExCeL, London).

“Last year, the 100 in 100 campaign exceeded its target and even caught the eye of the Government with a personal letter of congratulations from Prime Minister David Cameron,” said Simon Banks, Group Managing Director at the CSL DualCom Group and the co-founder of 100 in 100.

“This publicity is crucial in order to keep employers’ minds focused on apprenticeships as a credible recruitment source. Employers must engage with apprenticeships and recognise how valuable an apprentice can be within their company in a relatively short time frame.”

Banks also stated: “In just three years, the right candidate can become integral to the team and a great source of fresh ideas and skills. When you also factor in the potential skills gap predicted in the UK by 2020, it really is very important for employers to act now. Put simply, there has never been a better time to hire an apprentice.”

The political will is also there to make apprenticeships work. Matthew Hancock MP – the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning – is once again supporting the 100 in 100 campaign.

New apprenticeship opportunities in the UK security sector

Supporting the 2014 campaign are CSL DualCom and Skills for Security as well as the major inspectorates – the National Security Inspectorate and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board.

Also backing the apprenticeships drive are the British Security Industry Association, the Fire Industry Association and the Fire Protection Association.

100 in 100 focuses on all types of apprenticeship, among them installation engineers, manufacturing engineers, business administration, Human Resources, marketing and PR.

Apprentices usually take around 18 months to gain Level 2 qualifications, with a further 18 months required to take the apprentice to a Level 3.

Employers embracing the opportunities on offer will be responsible for paying employment costs of at least the minimum wage (for 16-18 year-olds and 19-year-olds in the first year of their apprenticeship). Employers will also be required to provide work-based training within their companies.

Skills for Security has again committed to look after paperwork for those organisations willing to employ new apprentices, right from initial sign-up through to appointing the college or training provider.

The training and skills body will also draw down Government funding on each participating company’s behalf.

According to the National Apprenticeship Service research undertaken in 2010, 77% of employers canvassed believe apprenticeships make them more competitive. The research also showed that 80% of employers believe apprenticeships reduce their staff turnover, while over 80% of consumers favour using those companies that take on new apprentices.

Record number of security apprentices recruited through 100 in 100 2013

Over 1,300 apprentices will be embarking on a new career in the security sector following the success of this year’s 100 in 100 initiative, which was launched at IFSEC International in May with the aim of recruiting 100 security apprentices in 100 days.

Sponsored by CSL DualCom and supported by Skills for Security, the National Security Inspectorate and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board, the 100 in 100 initiative has attracted a record level of interest in 2013, in turn realising the recruitment of 1,316 young apprentices across several disciplines of the security sector.

A total of 1,084 apprentices have been recruited via the security guarding sector, with the remainder embarking upon security systems apprenticeships.

The results of this year’s scheme were announced last night at the beginning of the 2013 Security Excellence Awards Ceremony, which took place at the London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane.

Demand so high in 2013

Jayne Sale, head of commercial services at Skills for Security, commented: “Demand has been so high this year that two groups in our London-based college were over-subscribed, resulting in new groups being planned to start there in April of next year. In addition, two new training venues have come on board in Exeter and Essex, bringing the total number of venues to ten and including Bromley, Chichester, Uxbridge, Exeter, Gloucester, Bradford, Preston, Newark, Birmingham and Hounslow.”

Sale continued: “We’re delighted with the results of this year’s initiative, and would like to thank all of the organisations who have supported us in our drive to attract the next generation of security professionals, in turn ensuring that our industry continues to thrive well into the future.”
