ASSA ABLOY Security Doors hosts BRE security testing day

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, has delivered a successful security testing day in partnership with the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Held at the ASSA ABLOY Security Doors factory in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, the day saw an excellent turn-out of security professionals who witnessed various methods of attack on both steel and timber doorsets.

The event consisted of an overview of the LPS 1175 test standard, a comprehensive factory tour and a practical demonstration that showed the difference between certified and non-certified security doors.

Ian Broadley, business development manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, said: “We hosted this event to help illustrate the difference between investing in a certificated product versus a product that may look similar visually, but can be compromised very easily when put to the test. A test rig was set up at our factory, housing two steel doors and two timber doors. The BRE team used various methods of attack to demonstrate how they were able to defeat the doors that were not built to meet LPS 1175 test standards.”

Broadley added: “We received a great deal of positive feedback from attendees, who included security consultants, end users, members of the police and Government personnel. Attendees commented on how thought-provoking it was to witness just how quickly non-certified doors could be compromised.”

Vista covers every angle with latest IP and analogue camera launches

Vista has just announced the newest additions to its VK2 and HDA ranges. The camera launches are supported by the introduction of the new ‘universal’ brackets which greatly simplify installation and were developed in line with ‘Voice of Customer’ feedback.

The collective aim of the cameras and brackets is to reduce installation time on site, (and therefore minimise cost). The use of the latest technology within the cameras and the intelligent product design means that “excellent quality images” can be produced and adjustments easily be made to meet future end user requirements.

The VK2 range has been developed with the customer very much in mind. The cameras are designed to reduce bandwidth and storage requirements along with minimising the time required on site for installing and adjusting the cameras.

Their ability to stream highly efficient H.265 video format, combined with Vista’s advanced Hi-Stream bandwidth reducing function, means that storage and bandwidth requirements can be up to 75% lower than that of an equivalent H.264 stream.

The VK2 cameras are available in both 2 MP and 4 MP formats and produce “crisper images” compared to those achieved by general IP cameras. This is as a result of a user-definable minimum/maximum shutter speed, true Wide Dynamic Range and IR illumination.

The VK2L range has been designed for those end users who require high quality video images delivered at a cost-effective price. These cameras reduce bandwidth and storage requirements like their VK2 siblings and, due to a wide angle lens, minimise the number of cameras required on site.

The key benefits shared by the VK2 and VK2L camera ranges are as follows:

Compatible with all modern NVRs and VMS H.265/H.264 compression formats make for a flexible system

Reduced required levels of bandwidth and storage Significantly reduced when used in H.265 mode and as a result of Hi-Stream Region of Interest which adds greater compression to areas with no motion

Ensure a much crisper frozen image User-definable minimum/maximum shutter speed provides much clearer images than general IP cameras

The launch also includes an analogue offer. The newly-released HDA cameras are capable of providing Full-HD 1080p resolution in TVI HDA format over coax cabling and provide a very flexible solution. A wide range of features make them suitable for many internal and external applications as well as providing excellent quality images without the requirement of an IP knowledge base.

The HDA range makes for the perfect transition from analogue to IP and can be used in conjunction with existing analogue infrastructure.

All of the IP and analogue cameras included in the launch are perfect for use with the Vista Viper range of NVRs and DVRs. ONVIF compliance ensures that they can also be used on multiple manufacturers’ recording platforms if existing systems are in place.

Alongside the cameras, the introduction of a new selection of ‘universal’ brackets simplifies installation and the process of selecting the correct bracket.

STANLEY Security adopts digital asset mapping for improved service and maintenance

STANLEY Security has adopted an innovative asset mapping technology to provide customers with more efficient system maintenance and servicing than ever before.

‘Connected Assets’ is an advanced digital asset mapping technology that enables STANLEY Security to quickly and easily map out an entire security system and all of its individual elements. It allows for detailed additional information to be included, such as images of equipment in situ.

Using ‘Connected Assets’, a visiting STANLEY engineer can now familiarise themselves with a customer’s security system before attending site and, while there, can quickly locate where specific items are that require servicing.

For customers, ‘Connected Assets’ means that an engineer can be on and off site quicker than ever before, making for a more efficient service with minimal disruption.

STANLEY Security can now make more efficient use of its resources. For example, with a complex site, rather than wait for an engineer who’s familiar with that site and its system(s), any available engineer can now be sent fully-loaded with the information they need to conduct that service visit.

For Stephen Hodgkinson-Soto, STANLEY Security’s service director, ‘Connected Assets’ marks a significant leap forward. “Most security companies use an asset register spreadsheet to detail an installed security system, but this is basic and limited in terms of what information you can include. In a digital world, this approach is out of date. Moving to ‘Connected Assets’ enables us to add considerably more valuable information and our field engineers are using it to good effect. It’s working well for our customers, both big and small.”

STANLEY Security’s maintenance and servicing options include service plans with differing levels of support to suit customers’ needs. The business boasts a network of expert technicians UK wide who can repair or maintain security equipment to ensure that it’s fully functional.

While STANLEY Security is currently using ‘Connected Assets’ to map static assets for its own service and maintenance contracts, Derek McLean (head of technology solutions at STANLEY Security) sees an even wider use for it.

“Using ‘Connected Assets’ for mapping customers’ security systems is the first step. We are looking at ways in which to further develop and use this innovative technology. For example, we’re already combining it with asset utilisation. Using technology such as Low Energy Bluetooth, GPS and RTLS location tracking, temperature monitoring and GSM we’re able to provide real-time information on assets, however large or small, both inside and outside a building.”

Biometric credentials added to Inner Range’s access control solutions

Inner Range’s access control customers can now benefit from biometric credentials thanks to a new partnership initiated with biometric technology company Zwipe. The new service, which uses clients’ existing card readers, is one of several intelligent integrations that Inner Range will be demonstrating at a free Integration Showcase on April 24 at its European headquarters near Reading.

Other integrators at the event include Morse Watchmans, which combines key locker control and asset management systems with Inner Range’s security solutions, as well as Stentofon (which offers intelligent intercom solutions via Inner Range software).

Tim Northwood, general manager of Inner Range Europe, said: “Integration is at the heart of what we do. Our products allow clients to control access to all manner of places, spaces, systems and products at the local, national and even global levels. Our new partnership with Zwipe is the latest in a long and ever-increasing line of integrations designed to help our customers better control their buildings and systems and streamline their processes. We very much hope that our Integration Showcase will highlight the options and sophistication available with our products and afford potential new clients the opportunity to see them in action.”

The new partnership with Zwipe means that Inner Range’s clients can add fingerprint data to credentials and, crucially, continue to use their existing card readers. They don’t need to buy costly new readers. The system can employ Inner Range’s encrypted Sifer readers and only stores the biometric data on the card rather than in a central database.

Morse Watchmans will be demonstrating how its key control system can integrate with Inner Range products to strengthen security, ensure personnel safety and restrict movement if necessary, as well as improve reporting compliance and reducing damage and resulting lost productivity.

Stentofon will showcase how its intercom solutions integrate with Inner Range products to enable clients ‘to hear, be heard and understood, every time’ by providing interactive graphical representations, status and controls across multiple sites.

Acuity provides Front of House services for Antares Underwriting

Acuity, the Axis Group’s Front of House division, is providing professional reception and meeting room management services at the London headquarters of Antares Underwriting, an independent Managing Agent at Lloyd’s.

Antares Underwriting moved its head office to 21 Lime Street last year and now occupies seven floors of the 32,000 sq ft development adjacent to Leadenhall Market. Acuity provides a reception manager, a receptionist and a Business Lounge manager to manage the meeting areas on the top floor business suite.

Antares outsourced its reception duties prior to the move to its new headquarters. Issues with significant levels of absenteeism from its previous team of directly employed receptionists led head of FM Nigel Cole to look for a better alternative.

“Our reliance on agency staff was disruptive, expensive and didn’t provide our internal and external customers with a Best in Class service,” explained Cole. “We wanted a reception team who could truly support our underwriters and help present an extremely professional face to visitors and callers.”

Cole chose to outsource and invited discussions with some of the larger providers, but formed the impression he would have to fit into step with how they operated. “Then we spoke with Acuity,” explained Cole, “who seemed to be very focused on delivering a professional service that was tailored to our needs, rather than simply giving us what they could provide.”

Greater insight gained

Working with Antares ahead of the move gave Acuity a greater insight into how the reception, meeting rooms and Business Lounge could best be managed. This included creating visitor journeys to ensure that visitors are seamlessly looked after.

“It’s imperative to use the space we have as best as we can,” continued Cole. “Acuity helped us do that with the Business Lounge. Our Business Lounge manager co-ordinates all the meeting room bookings, receives visitors and also sets up and breaks down meeting rooms to ensure that they are ready for any internal or external guests.”

The Acuity team have all been recruited in collaboration with Cole and his team to ensure the right fit with the business. They wear high quality uniforms and are given regular training to provide them with the skills to deliver a world-class reception service.

All cover staff are trained on site to minimise disruption and maintain consistency of the professional service the team provides. Indeed, Cole commented: “Having a reserve of fully-trained substitute staff already familiar with our business, ready to come in for planned and unplanned absences, is an absolutely key benefit to our business.”

Outperforming the ‘traditional’ approach

Neil Ames, director for Acuity, believes that the company’s outsourced service outperforms the ‘traditional’ approach to directly employing reception personnel. “We know that we can save businesses money by reducing the spend on temporary cover but, through our selection process and professional training, we can also ensure that businesses experience all the benefits of having high-end, five-star reception services with the support of our head office team. Antares Underwriting is proving to be the perfect example of this.”

Cole agrees that the level of professionalism has increased significantly since working with Acuity. “We now have the five-star service that we expect and a team that takes pride in what it does. The handover from night officers to the reception – and vice-versa – is now much easier without the challenge of absenteeism, while the integration between the two teams is very helpful for the smooth operation of the building.”
