ONVIF releases Profile A for broader access control configuration

ONVIF, the global standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, has announced the final release of Profile A for broader access control configuration that establishes a standardised interface for access control clients and expands the configuration options of ONVIF-conformant access control systems.

The release marks the first open specification that allows for the mixing and matching of access control devices and clients within a system, in turn facilitating interoperability for multi-vendor projects.

ONVIF Profile A encompasses daily access control functions for granting and revoking employee credentials, creating and updating schedules and making changes to access control privileges within the system. Profile A deepens interoperability within the access control market by increasing functionality and system management functions at the client level, enabling the configuration of credentialing, scheduling and access privileges through the Profile A-conformant client interface.

“Profile A is a significant development for the market because it provides a pathway for integrating access control panels and hardware with management software from different manufacturers,” said Per Björkdahl, ONVIF’s Steering Committee chairman. “This pathway for integration also provides future-proofing of an access control system as it allows another manufacturer’s access control management software to be installed in the future, eliminating the need for a hardware ‘rip and replace’ scenario.”

The interoperability established by Profile A allows end users and system integrators alike to make hardware and software choices based on functionality and performance, and will also bridge the gap between legacy hardware and new software if both are Profile A-conformant. The new Profile further enables integration between access control and IP video management systems when combined with ONVIF Profile C for basic access control and Profile S for video streaming.

Profile A has been available in release candidate status in order to provide industry review and feedback prior to the final release. ONVIF circulates a new profile first as a ‘Release Candidate’ for at least six months, allowing members and stakeholders a final implementation review. When that process is complete, the final profile is published and members can then test their products for conformance to the final version of an ONVIF Profile. This process is intended to allow members to more quickly introduce conformant products when the final version of a Profile is released.

Founded in 2008, ONVIF is a well-recognised industry forum driving interoperability for IP-based physical security products. The organisation has a global member base of established camera, video management system and access control companies and nearly 8,000 Profile-conformant products.

Backed by Profile S for streaming video, Profile G for recording and storage, Profile C for physical access control, Profile Q for improved out-of-the-box functionality and the new Profile T Release Candidate for advanced streaming, ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutions ONVIF-conformant products can provide.

Hikvision’s DS-2TD2136 thermal camera: CCTV Product of the Year in PSI’s Premier Awards 2017

Qognify and Bosch expand co-operation to deliver “new level” of interoperable security solutions

Qognify, the specialist in Big Data solutions for physical security and operations, has expanded the integration of Bosch network video security cameras and Qognify’s Situator and VisionHub, in turn providing customers with advanced technology and business benefits.

This ‘Best of Breed’ solution creates centralised management for the entire platform with direct integration of Bosch cameras to Situator (Situation Management/PSIM) and VisionHub (Video Management System).

The integration enhances security management and operational benefits by leveraging situation management, video and visualisation capabilities:

*Centralised control and management through Situator Direct integration between Bosch’s network video security cameras and Situator. The integration enables PTZ and PTZ-like control for moving and fixed cameras, automatic triggering of processes when pre-defined incidents occur based on pre-defined alarm rules using cameras’ built-in video analytics, playback via local camera storage and camera tampering detection.

*Advanced video management capabilities via Qognify VisionHub including de-warping The advanced integration of Bosch’s FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 camera and Qognify’s VMS eliminates fish eye lens distortion, enabling 360° of view without blind spots and with an non-distorted overview image. Additionally, the PTZ-like control of the video allows end users to digitally pan, tilt and zoom in order to focus on details without losing the bigger picture. This advance support of de-warping means empowering the benefit from wide coverage using a single device, while having a “normal” view of an otherwise distorted or reversed image.

This enables the delivery of video analytics alarms based on pre-definable alarm rules from the camera to VisionHub and Situator. In addition, the integration supports the Qognify video analytics suite running centrally on the recorder, combining Bosch built-in (edge) video analytics with Qognify’s server-based video analytics. This offers customers maximum flexibility when designing a video analytics solution.

London Digital Security Centre and Oxford University pool resources to develop White Paper on Digital Security for SMEs

Oxford University, in association with the London Digital Security Centre (LDSC), will be looking at the challenges faced by SMEs and their importance to the economy as a supply chain link to larger companies and Government in order to produce an academic White Paper entitled ‘Developing Security Education and Awareness Programmes for SMEs’ for publication this coming November.

The White Paper will provide an overall review of the LDSC’s approach and effectiveness on security education for SMEs. This work will provide recommendations for assessing the effectiveness of such programmes in future and the LDSC’s specifically.

Providing education and training for this sector is crucial in order to ensure that cyber security capacity measures (such as ‘10 Steps to Cyber Security – Cyber Essentials’) are actually implemented. This White paper will explore current offerings on cyber security education and training for SMEs and identify the existing gaps.

Drafted by Dr Maria Bada and Dr Jason Nurse, the authors have already published similar work on the effectiveness of cyber security awareness raising. This new White Paper will build on previous knowledge and expertise using interviews and focus groups to collect information.

Dr Bada commented: “Our aim is to review the London Digital Security Centre’s approach to security education for SMEs and the motivation for this initiative. We will critically reflect on the effectiveness of the LDSC’s approach thus far. Our methodology is based on qualitative and quantitative data.”

The LDSC has already recognised the challenges that SMEs face when it comes to cyber security and is helping businesses to embrace digital innovations and operate in a secure online environment such that they protect themselves against cyber criminals.

John Unsworth, CEO at the LDSC, concluded: “Our role is to help improve the security posture of SMEs operating in London. It’s vital we understand their motivation and the issues they face to ensure the training and advice we give is implemented. This is particularly important given that over 1,000 SMEs in London report a digital crime to Action Fraud every month.”

UK’s biggest prison now on verge of full capacity

The biggest prison in the UK should reach full capacity pretty soon, with construction work on track to end this month and allow the opening of the third and final wing. The first prisoners were moved to HMP Berwyn in Wrexham on 28 February and into Bala wing, with this wing and its cousins collectively designed to house 702 prisoners.

The second wing, designated Alwen, opened in May, with Ministry of Justice (MoJ) bosses confirming the third and final wing, Ceiriog, is on schedule to open this month, bringing the total capacity of adult male offenders to 2,106 – 500 inmates more than the biggest current prison in England and Wales was built to hold.

The majority will be Category C prisoners, meaning that they’ve been assessed as having a lower likelihood of escaping, though some Category B prisoners could also be accommodated.

Governor Russ Trent has explained that his emphasis is on rehabilitation, with staff calling the prisoners ‘men’ who will have ‘rooms’ rather than cells.

The construction of HMP Berwyn began in May 2015 and will cost £250 million.

Reductions in overcrowding

The Government has pledged to spend £1.3 billion on new prisons. After the riots in HMP Birmingham last year, Justice Secretary Liz Truss said the new prison in Wales ‘will help to reduce overcrowding across the estate’. Nine more new prisons are expected to be built, with five set to be opened by 2020.

Binns Fencing won the order to supply and install almost 2 km of 5.2 metre-high prison-standard secure perimeter fencing for the Wrexham ‘super prison’. Manufacturer Zaun supplied the MoJ-approved prison posts and fencing mesh.

Binns has proposed a new model of perimeter security and PIDs procurement and delivery, whereby it offers a single point of contact for the complete perimeter security package, providing greater opportunity for innovation, in turn reducing complexity and the need for managing multiple contractors.

The company believes this could offer significant cost savings on PIDs cable installation as well as both contract and project management costs.

HMP Berwyn is already anticipated to be the cheapest prison to run per prisoner in England and Wales.. It’s expected to run at £14,000 per head per year, including overheads, compared with £40,170 at HMP Parc in Bridgend, which was built under the Government’s Private Finance Initiative and is operated by G4S.

Abloy UK introduces RIBA-approved CPD

Abloy UK has released a new RIBA-approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course covering all aspects of electric locking for fire and/or escape door applications.

Fire and escape standards have been developed first and foremost to preserve lives, allow emergency escape and prevent the spread of fire and smoke in dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

These standards mean that managers of buildings are legally obliged to adhere to Building Regulations when it comes to access control, for example by protecting escape routes and allowing for the safe egress of a building’s occupants in the event of an emergency situation.

Abloy’s CPD covers traditional requirements for escape and panic doors. For example when a door is electronically controlled for access, there must be a mechanical means of escape in the event of an emergency.

The new additions to escape door standards clarify what is and what isn’t acceptable as an escape door solution. Simply, any door that has a fire exit requirement must be fitted with fire-tested products, making sure the route to escape is never compromised.

The course also covers ‘Dynamic Lockdown’ which essentially enables escape for the occupants of a building and prevents unauthorised access to areas by compartmentalising zones in buildings, potentially saving lives in threatening situations.

The CPD is recommended for anyone directly responsible for specifying and installing fire and escape doors or related equipment and is available at the Abloy Academy, which is based at Abloy UK’s head office. By arrangement, the CPD can also be presented to local groups throughout the UK.

BAFE issues updated fire extinguisher servicing competency scheme document

BAFE has released the documentation for the revision of its fire extinguisher maintenance/service scheme (SP101). This is now available via the BAFE website (www.bafe.org.uk/sp101-2017), with the revision coming into effect from 1 October 2017.

In April last year, after a lengthy consultation period, BAFE launched the review of its fire extinguisher maintenance (SP101/ST104) scheme with the creation of a scheme revision group chaired by Dave Russell. Over the last year, which has included a public consultation, changes have been made to update, enhance and strengthen the scheme.

The revised SP101 scheme continues to provide the best assurances to the industry and its customers of what defines a quality provider of fire extinguisher services in today’s market and also updates and strengthens the role of the fire extinguisher technician.

A BAFE-registered fire extinguisher technician has always been the defining way of acknowledging that a competent person is working on a given premises. This has now been enhanced further by including additional technical competence to the revised sections of BS 5306: Fire Extinguishing Installations and Equipment on Premises as well as requirements for having training in asbestos awareness and Health and Safety procedures.

The technician competency portfolio used by the BAFE assessors has also been reviewed, ensuring that all technicians who gain the esteemed BAFE Diploma continue to be the best in the industry. Passing the BS 5306 examination is only the first step in demonstrating understanding of the relevant standards to work competently in the field.

The scheme now also offers a dual route option. When the revised scheme goes live in October, organisations can gain third party certification via an ISO 9001 or a Management System route.

Both routes use the same audit criteria for fire extinguisher competencies, however, offering peace of mind for those individuals specifying a certified, competent provider that a BAFE-registered company with proficient technicians is an assured quality decision.
