“Hybrid cloud and the CIO will rule in 2017” asserts Informatica

Cloud has reached maturity. No longer seen as the dangerous option, widespread cloud adoption will enable more flexible and rapid service in 2017. As a result, businesses will need to have total control of their infrastructure and sensitive data if they’re to keep up. With this in mind, Greg Hanson (vice-president for worldwide consulting at data specialist Informatica), has moved to explain the four areas businesses must prepare for in 2017 if they’re to perfect their cloud strategy.

Enterprises will embrace a hybrid cloud approach to dispel data fragmentation

Widespread adoption of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has traditionally been the preserve of SMEs looking for subscription-based models and easily scalable software. Yet pockets of SaaS investment have crept into the enterprise in 2016, occurring within individual lines of business and causing data fragmentation which hampers agility.

In 2017, rather than shying away from SaaS deployments business-wide, successful enterprises will embrace a hybrid approach to the cloud and reclaim their single view of data assets.

Security will no longer be a question of on-premise or cloud

It’s no longer about whether on-premise or cloud is more secure, but rather about understanding that breaches come from the inside. Threats exist inside the firewall and, as a result, perimeter defence has long since been ineffective.

After all, the biggest threat to an organisation’s security posture doesn’t come from the kind of infrastructure and software it uses, but rather its people.

The amount of data that business users are consuming and demanding means it’s the data management strategy that’s imperative. Security posture in 2017 will be defined by an organisation’s ability to carve out a cohesive data management strategy to track data wherever it resides, and then secure it at its source. 

Brands will live and die by their customer experience

From financial institutions to retailers and manufacturers, customer experience will overtake price as the new differentiator for customers. As such, data stewardship and governance will become the priority for those delivering second-to-none experiences and successful transformation projects.

It’s all very well pulling data assets together and sharing them with lines of business for these initiatives, but they will need to know that the quality of the data they’re implementing into systems is pristine.

What’s more, they will need the right guidance and tools to access the data in the first place and visualise it in such a way that it can travel the last mile and be put into real use. This is where a cohesive data management strategy is essential for bridging the disconnect between data scientists and business users. 

CIOs will secure their future by reclaiming ownership of data initiatives

With CIOs increasingly facing competition from a tech-savvy set of business IT buyers, it will be imperative that the former step up and take ownership of business agility and transformation to ensure they still lead their organisation’s digital journey.

Lines of business are increasingly looking to do things cheaper and quicker without the involvement of IT. This means that CIOs will need to reclaim control of data management at its root to drive enterprise-wide security and improve accessibility of data.

Only then can they fully ensure that the single view of the company’s data assets doesn’t become somewhat ‘muddied’ by a disjointed IT spend and independent data management across the business.

PACOM Systems achieves highest European security grade for protection

PACOM Systems, the specialist in high-level integrated security management, has just announced that the 8002 Intelligent Field Controller and associated devices have been awarded EN50131 Grade 4 approval – the highest European standard for intruder alarm security and signalling.

The EN50131 standard uses the concept of security grades to classify Intrusion and Hold-Up Alarm Systems based upon the level of risk. Grade 1 is the lowest tier and represents environments in which intruders are expected to have a low knowledge of intruder alarm systems and there’s a low risk of theft.

At the other end of the scale, a Grade 4 system is where security takes precedence over all other factors. At this level, intruders are expected to have the ability and resources to plan a burglary in advance and have the knowledge and equipment to alter part of the intruder alarm system to avoid detection.

Grade 4 compliance indicates that PACOM Systems has met the demanding requirements of the EN50131 standard. The 8002 controller is now certified for the highest risk environments which can include applications in the banking and finance, military, transport, Government, education and healthcare sectors.

The PACOM 8002 is an integrated access and alarm controller that delivers an all-in-one building platform integrating the functionality required for remote security system. As an alarm system, the 8002 supports up to 32 alarm areas and 256 alarm zones. The 8002 controller can operate stand-alone for smaller projects or as part of a fully-integrated alarm and access control system for larger buildings or multi-site applications.

2016 Christmas Appeal for Armed Forces veterans kick-starts on 29 November

With many Armed Forces veterans presently working in the security sector, the charity PTSD Resolution is this year sponsored by ASIS UK, who are organising a series of fundraising events. Free of charge, the charity (No. 1133188) helps veterans and reservists who are struggling to reintegrate into a normal work and family life because of military trauma suffered during service in the Armed Forces.

The charity has helped to resolve mental health issues for over 1,400 veterans. Nearly eight out of ten of them say that they require no further treatment after completing the treatment programme.

Donations to the Armed Forces veterans’ charity will be doubled when donated online in the 72 hours from 12.00 pm on 29 November – visit the Big Give (https://goo.gl/sVV8pD).

PTSD Resolution was selected to participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2016, which is the UK’s largest match funding campaign. Last year, the campaign raised over £7.2 million for participating charities.

The treatment programme is community-based, with therapy and support provided locally. Trauma causes flashbacks, nightmares, anger and depression – often leading to violence, alcohol and substance abuse, job loss, family breakdown and even suicide. PTSD Resolution’s therapy is brief, with an average of just five sessions usually required, and conducted on an out-patient basis, which supports family and work routines.

The programme is complementary to the work of other services’ charities in that it resolves the mental health issues that can serve as barriers to successful reintegration and settlement.

“There are many Armed Forces veterans working in the security sector,” explained a spokesperson for the charity. “Some may have unresolved issues arising from trauma that was suffered during their service to their country. Often, an existing mental health condition can be exacerbated by a stressful situation at work which may be related to a security incident, or perhaps a clash with a manager or colleague. Job loss and domestic issues may also trigger problems that result in major deterioration, We want veterans to know that there’s help a hand and that they don’t have to wait to get better.”

Intertek approved as certification body and test lab for non-electrical equipment used in hazardous areas

Intertek, a total quality assurance provider to industries worldwide, is now an approved International Electrotechnical Commission Explosive (IECEx) certification body and test laboratory and can provide global third party approval on non-electrical equipment for use in hazardous areas. This will give confidence to the global petroleum, chemical and pharmaceuticals and food industries when it comes to the safety of non-electrical equipment on their sites.

Intertek’s Chester and Leatherhead laboratories have tested European equipment under the ATEX Directive for over ten years. With the recent arrival of the ISO/IEC 80079-36 and ISO/IEC 80079–37 standards and their incorporation within the IECEx certification scheme, these laboratories are now approved to accept global applications from equipment manufacturers, package assemblers and end users for certification to these standards.

They can also provide guidance on the application of the IECEx scheme and discuss individual manufacturers’ responsibilities and routes to compliance within the scheme.

“In a market where safety is paramount, operators of sites such as oil refineries, process plants, chemical works, food processing sites or off-shore platforms look to mitigate the risk to people and plant through third party approvals of equipment or accreditations,” said Andrew Austin, UK head of the ATEX Notified Body at Intertek and the individual responsible for IECEx activities. “With the extension of the IECEx scheme, which is already a well-established scheme for electrical equipment, Intertek can now give these operators the confidence that non-electrical equipment on their site doesn’t pose an explosion safety risk.”

Until now there was only a European Directive, namely the ATEX Directive, addressing the explosion safety risk associated with non-electrical equipment, with no international third party approval route for global supply, while the existing IECEx scheme only covered electrical equipment.

However, with the introduction this year of international standards ISO/IEC 80079-36 and ISO/IEC 80079–37 and their incorporation within the IECEx certification scheme, Intertek can now provide the industry with global third party approval for non-electrical equipment.

The overriding aim of the IECEx scheme is to have one certification scheme for any hazardous area product that’s recognised and accepted throughout the world.

Adams Rite and Kestrel Aluminium Systems partner to reduce burglaries

Adams Rite, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions (a UK division of ASSA ABLOY), is now working with Kestrel Aluminium Systems to secure properties with doorsets tested to the important UK security standard PAS24.

According to The Crime Prevention Website, enhanced secure doors and “their performance in terms of their contribution to reducing burglary has been quite breathtaking.” PAS24 is supported by Secured by Design on behalf of the UK police service.

Kestrel Aluminum Systems is supplying a wide range of properties (including private dwellings and commercial properties) with the thermally efficient aluminium single and double doorsets that have been proven to successfully resist all PAS24 attacks.

The doorsets offer ‘enhanced security’ and incorporate Adams Rite’s Sentinel M commercial multipoint locks, which includes the new three-star security-rated cylinder platform.

Steven Shute, managing director at Kestrel Aluminium Systems, said: “Working with Adams Rite has allowed us to use ASSA ABLOY’s UKAS-accredited test lab to ensure our components resisted all PAS24 attacks, without failure or opening. The testing included timed manual attack methods, hard and soft body impact tests and mechanical load testing of 4500N, providing us with the confidence that our doorsets will not only conserve heat, but also adequately protect occupants and assets in a range of projects.”
