Castel’s IP-based intercom solution helps secure London Underground’s maintenance depots

London Underground (LU) has embarked on a major security upgrade at its London maintenance depots and, as part of that process, has procured Castel’s IP intercom solution as part of that process.

Operations at the busy sites include general maintenance and train cleaning while facilities encompass driver rest areas. A large number of employees, suppliers and other visitors pass through LU’s various depots on a daily basis.

Working alongside Honeywell Security, Castel has supplied an IP intercom solution that will help protect the sites from the theft of high-value plant and equipment and the ever-increasing problem of metal and cable theft from the rail network.

The previous intercom system was made up of numerous disparate technologies and obsolete equipment and would have been too expensive to upgrade or repair. As a result, the decision was taken by Transport for London to invest in a totally new IP intercom system, together with a new Honeywell surveillance and access control system.

A dedicated site-wide network was installed for 35 of Castel’s CAP IP PoE (Power over Ethernet) Video Entry Stations which have been used for the gates, vehicle barriers and turnstiles. All calls are networked back to a single central point locally – either a gatehouse or Security Control Room.

However, if a call goes unanswered, the next available operator at another depot will be able to receive and deal with it – another great advantage of using an IP/SIP network solution. This feature helped reassure LU’s management team that no calls would go unanswered, particularly as round-the-clock access to the sites is critical.

Operators using Castel’s Xellip IP Master Stations now have the ability for simultaneous video communication with other colleagues across all sites, thereby enhancing overall security and generally improving working conditions. Castel’s Xellip Server Max has also been used on the project, which allows up to 1,000 SIP extensions and provides plenty of capacity for expanding the system in the future.

The new intercom system will not only prevent unwanted visitors from accessing the sites, some of which cover a very large area and have many entrance and exit points, but will also safeguard staff working there and give them easier access.

Castel’s sales director Stuart Hibberd commented: “This project demonstrates our ability to provide an IP video intercom solution in a very demanding environment where there’s a great deal of traffic and valuable assets.”

Checkpoint Systems’ EVOLVE-Store app provides retailers with real-time Electronic Article Surveillance

Checkpoint Systems, a leading global supplier of merchandise availability solutions for the retail sector, has announced the launch of EVOLVE-Store, a real-time app for smart phones and tablets that supports real-time electronic article surveillance (EAS) and organised retail crime event management.

The app was developed in response to retail customer requests for an easy means of ensuring that store associates leverage EAS investments appropriately, comply with store shoplifting policies and have EAS systems always turned on and operating in the correct manner.

Features in the EVOLVE-Store app enable retailers to measure and improve consumer conversion rates through real-time visibility of the number of shoppers in stores. The app also measures policy compliance by managing response times to alarm events.

By monitoring, measuring and managing an EAS program, retailers can deter opportunistic shoplifters and organised retail crime activity, reducing shrink and increasing shelf availability, sales and profits. In turn, this improves staff confidence and engagement with the EAS program, ensuring a significant improvement on the return on investment.

Additional features include a staff panic alert to request help from colleagues, an EAS night-save feature to save power when the store is closed, the ability to test, mute or disable EAS systems remotely and multi-user logins for each smart device. 

Beyond retailer advantages, shoppers benefit because stores can monitor inventory more closely and replenish ‘true’ out-of-stocks, so merchandise they seek will likely be available on shelves when purchasing online through click and collector buying directly in stores.

Moreover, studies have shown that shoppers feel safer in monitored retail environments.

BSIA issues White Paper on Information Destruction and revised guidance on Lone Working

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and its Information Destruction Section has announce the publication of a White Paper designed to be used as a guide for public sector agencies and any organisation wishing to benchmark against that sector and provide the correct protocols in the destruction of sensitive items and materials.

The guide references previously published guidance documents from the Cabinet Office and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) in order to promote the required specifications for data destruction and the importance of secure information destruction.

Entitled Information Destruction in the Public Sector, the document specifies which sensitive materials should be securely destroyed. Furthermore, it defines the varying levels of secure information and documents that should be disposed of in the appropriate manner.

Threat profiles are assessed and analysed in tiers of severity, while the White Paper also affords organisations guidance on specifying the desired outcomes that information destruction should produce.

Adam Chandler, chairman of the BSIA’s Information Destruction Section, has expressed how the White Paper might serve private sector companies and the public sector as a whole.

The security of information is an issue of paramount importance in the 21st Century,” asserted Chandler. “Data breaches can be more than costly. They can ruin a Government’s credibility as well as a private sector company’s reputation. British organisations must fortify their infrastructure by ensuring standards are upheld and that data is adequately disposed of. By adhering to the standards set by the Government and referenced by the BSIA in this White Paper; citizens, employees and civil servants will be better protected.”

BSIA publishes revised lone worker guidance documents

The BSIA has also just published revisions to two of its lone worker guides.

The revisions have been made to Form 144: A Guide to Buying a Lone Worker Service and Form 288: Lone Workers – An Employer’s Guide in order to reflect recent changes in the lone worker services market.

Form 144: A Guide to Buying a Lone Worker Service provides end users with advice on how to go about procuring a lone worker service that will be right for their business and what information needs to be prepared before a potential supplier is approached.

Form 288: Lone Workers – An Employer’s Guide provides employers with essential information about their responsibilities towards their lone workers as well as detail around what they should expect from a lone worker device, its supplier, an Alarm Receiving Centre and the response.

Steve Lampett, technical officer at the BSIA, explained: “The BSIA’s Lone Worker Section decided to update these very useful guides to reflect changes within the lone worker services market. While many of these changes are minor routine amendments, educating the marketplace is a key objective of the Association. On that basis, ensuring industry guidance is up to date is of vital importance.”

Amendments to the guides include the following:

Form 144: A Guide to Buying a Lone Worker Service

  • Reflection of the new requirement placed on the supplier highlighting the need to be flexible in terms of alarm escalation contacts (including at different times of the day/week, escalation and prioritisation processes)
  • Inclusion of a greater emphasis on the supplier to provide ongoing training options for the customer

Form 288: Lone Workers – An Employer’s Guide

  • Changes from BS 8484:2009 to BS 8484:2011
  • Addition of the provision for using the services of BS 8591 Category 2 Alarm Receiving Centres
  • Health and Safety Executive guidance updates
  • Reflecting the name change of the Association of Chief Police Officers by replacing it with the National Police Chiefs’ Council

Craig Swallow, chairman of the BSIA’s dedicated Lone Worker Section, stated: “We wanted to ensure that our guidance remains up to date and continues to be useful for end users to refer to when procuring a lone worker service. The Section therefore felt it necessary to update both Form 144 and Form 288. We expect further changes will need to be made to these forms and other BSIA lone worker publications when the current revision of BS 8484 has been completed in 2016.”
