Personal best for Securitas Security Services UK as officers scoop six national BSIA honours

Securitas Security Services UK has triumphed at this year’s British Security Industry Association (BSIA) Security Personnel Awards, the regional and national awards scheme designed to pay tribute to the outstanding work of security officers over the preceding 12-month period. Securitas was honoured to receive a record six accolades, including two out of the three national trophies bestowed in the Outstanding Act category.

The first Outstanding Act award went to Tim Prodger from Somerset for his vigilance and integrity throughout an ‘intense incident’ which happened during his shift at a major London supermarket. Prodger acted when he overheard a man in the store’s toilets attempting to take his own life. After breaking down the toilet cubicle door, the security officer administered First Aid to the man, who had already lost a great deal of blood.

Prodger remained with the distressed male until paramedics arrived on scene. A store spokesperson said that, without Prodger’s timely intervention, the man would have undoubtedly died.

The award for another Outstanding Act was handed to Chris Fielding from Chesterfield. A Chesterfield Royal Hospital security supervisor of four years standing, Fielding received the award as a result of his initiative and professionalism throughout a potentially dangerous and challenging incident.

While on duty, Fielding and a colleague were called to one of the wards where there had been ongoing reports of a volatile and aggressive man. Shortly after the security officers arrived on the ward, the man managed to escape restraint, running away on several occasions and attempting to take his own life.

Fielding repeatedly prevented this from happening, firstly reasoning with the man and then physically stepping in. The man switched between pleading and aggression each time and, at one point, threatened the lives of the security officers.  On his last attempt, the man locked himself in a room and, unable to gain access, Fielding used his torch to strike the glass repeatedly in order to be able to get his hand through it and unlock the door from the inside.

Once inside, Fielding immediately restrained the male who was then escorted by three security officers and two police constables to a holding ward.

In the same category, security officer Adam Murphy was given a special commendation for bravery. Last September, while driving to work in the early hours of the morning, Murphy witnessed a violent crime occurring in the street and involving a deadly weapon. He instinctively drove his van between the two brawlers in order to separate them. After several exchanges of the weapon and its subsequent discarding, Murphy and a member of the public exited their vehicles to assist the wounded man. The attacker escaped, although Murphy gave chase and eventually managed to restrain the offender.

Best Newcomer and Best Team

A national BSIA accolade for Best Newcomer went to Barrow in Furness security officer and emergency medical technician Paul Wilson who joined the security team at BAE Systems back in August 2013, bringing his past experience as an emergency medical technician with him.

The introduction of Securitas personnel into BAE’s existing in-house customer team was a new concept but Wilson’s personal skills soon proved extremely important in not only dealing with employees in sensitive medical situations, but also when it came to ensuring his integration and relationship building with the customer.

In May 2014, Wilson’s professionalism and attention to detail won him a Securitas Community Award for Vigilance after he identified a concern with a patient during a routine medical examination. During the patient’s subsequent recovery, his surgeon informed him he was lucky he had been diagnosed quickly thanks to Wilson’s efforts as a delay may have resulted in a major stroke.

Bristol’s Sainsbury’s Emerald Park Team received a Best Team award for greatly reducing damages in and around the site and accumulating “outstanding” KPI results. The team manages the flow of traffic throughout significant gas tank installation projects, assisting in securing the site and making sure staff and visitors have the correct access cards and authorisation.

The team also supports the Emerald Park charity, namely the Frenchay After Burns Club. Their dedication and enthusiasm saw five of the security team volunteer to participate in a charity walk, completing the Brecon Beacons peaks in one day.  The team of five walked nine miles, climbed a total of 2,907 feet in six hours and raised £1,000 for the worthy charity which supports young burns victims and their families.

Contribution to the Community

Finally, the coveted BSIA Chairman’s Award for Contribution to the Community went to the company’s Tour of Securitas – a charity initiative which raised over £3,000 for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The virtual cycling Tour began in Edinburgh on 8 September last year and involved over 800 officers and support staff across 21 branches. The staff cycled on static bikes to help increase awareness of safety in the workplace and raise vital funds for the charity. Finishing in Uxbridge five days later, the Tour clocked up a total of 2,677 miles.

The awards were announced at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon which took place at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane.

Speaking about the company’s success, Brian Riis Nielsen (Securitas’ Country President), told Risk UK: “Our officers prove time after time that they’re fully prepared to go above and beyond in their line of duty and we’re once again very proud of their achievements and recognition.”

VSG celebrates national-level successes at 2015 BSIA Security Personnel Awards

Security specialist VSG, part of the Compass Group UK & Ireland, is celebrating after two individuals and a team picked up British Security Industry Association (BSIA) Security Personnel Awards for 2015 at the national level. There was further reason to celebrate as VSG was awarded the Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Training thanks to the company’s excellent Zero Assaults Project.

The BSIA’s annual Security Personnel Awards recognise security professionals who demonstrate dedication, loyalty, progressive teamwork, great customer service skills, efficient use of technology and bravery on a daily basis. Now in their 17th year, the awards were presented by Alfie Moore, a serving policeman and popular stand-up comedian, at the Association’s exclusive Annual Luncheon held at the London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane.

VSG’s talented people were recognised with three awards across a range of categories. Marcin Bereza won the award for Best Use of Technology, the VSG Security Team at Centrale in Croydon won the award for Best Team and Donald Murray scooped the award for Service to the Customer.

The BSIA Chairman’s Awards celebrate outstanding contributions made to the ongoing success of the UK’s private security industry. The BSIA’s chairman, Pauline Norstrom (chief operating officer at Dedicated Micros and the AD Group) personally selected this year’s winners. As stated, VSG was presented with the Contribution to Training Award for its Zero Assaults Project, a training initiative that has significantly lowered the number of assaults on security officers.

Speaking about these success stories, Barry Dawson (business director at VSG) told Risk UK: “The BSIA’s Security Personnel Awards are the most prestigious of their kind and I’m incredibly proud of all our winners and their fantastic achievements. CEM Systems releases OSDP v2 compliant door controller to support HID Global’s iCLASS SE reader range

CEM Systems – part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco – has released the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) v2 compliant eDCM 350. The CEM eDCM 350 OSDP is a two-door intelligent IP controller that’s designed to interface with OSDP-compliant smart card readers and provides a secure encrypted communication channel between the smart card reader and the door controller.

OSDP is an Open Supervised Device Protocol for peripheral devices. With added Secure Channel Protocol (SCP) specification, it pro­vides bi-directional communications and advanced security features for connecting to OSDP-compliant card readers.

With the CEM eDCM (Door Control Module) 350 intelligent internal database, cards can be validated even while offline, in turn ensuring the highest levels of system uptime and reliability.

The eDCM 350 OSDP may be configured to support two OSDP-compliant readers on two separate doors with optional exit push buttons, or to support two OSDP-compliant readers on a single door for entry/exit control.

In addition, the CEM eDCM 350 OSDP supports a range of HID Global ODSP v2 compliant readers, among them iCLASS SE R10, R30, R40 and RK40.

Bright futures ahead for winners of the BSIA’s 2015 Apprentice Installer Awards

Young security apprentices Robbie Jackson and Christopher Hunt have been presented with prestigious Apprentice Installer Awards by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). The apprentices were selected as award winners in recognition of their academic and practical success in the field of electronic security systems installation.

The BSIA’s Apprentice Installer Awards serve to recognise the achievements of Level Two and Level Three apprentices involved in the installation of intruder alarms, CCTV solutions, access control systems or a combination of these systems, and represent the commitment of security companies and training bodies towards providing young talent with the opportunity to succeed in the security business sector.

The overall winner of the 2015 Apprentice Installer Awards is 18-year old Robbie Jackson, a third year apprentice working for Compass Fire & Security in Cumbria who was nominated by his course assessor Mark Cunningham of Skills for Security.

From his very first interview, Compass Fire & Security was impressed by Jackson’s ‘can-do’ attitude while the budding security professional’s potential to succeed shone through from the very beginning.

Considering an apprenticeship as an alternative to university, Jackson quickly progressed in his role to become a valued member of the company. Looking ahead to the future, his ambition is to become a lead engineer by his mid-20s and later progress into management. It’s an ambition that his bosses at Compass Fire & Security believe he will achieve.

Andrew Turner, who manages Jackson at Compass Fire & Security, commented: “I firmly believe in the apprenticeship scheme and that apprentices are an asset to any organisation. One of Robbie’s positive attributes is his ability to learn or understand a new or unfamiliar piece of equipment very quickly. Over the years, Robbie has progressed extremely well.”

On being informed of his success in the Apprentice Installer Awards, Jackson said: “I’m delighted to have been selected as overall winner of the BSIA’s Apprentice Installer Award for 2015. Since being taken on as an apprentice with Compass Fire & Security, I’ve worked very hard to ensure that I have completed all aspects of the apprenticeship to the best of my ability and gained the knowledge necessary to become a qualified engineer. I hope to continue my personal development as an engineer with Compass Fire & Security with a view to one day being in a position to apply for more senior roles within the company. My apprenticeship and work placement have been both fulfilling and rewarding and I’m very much looking forward to the next phase of my career in this industry sector.”

Self-motivation and positive attitude

Achieving National Winner status is 17-year old Christopher Hunt, a first year apprentice who works for King’s Security. Following in his father’s footsteps by gravitating towards a career in security, Hunt has duly earned the respect of his colleagues and mentors in the business due to his self-motivation and positive attitude.

Helping out on many major projects for top-rated clients, Hunt demonstrates a good knowledge of IP-based CCTV and understands alarm wiring theory and fault-finding. Comfortable working with IT systems, Hunt is able to add/remove cameras from a system, program interfaces and focus/zoom a camera all from a Windows-based PC.

Nominator of Hunt for this award was Andrew Wood, installation supervisor at Kings Security. “Chris has become a really valued member of the team,” said Wood, “and is everyone’s choice as a ‘second man’. He understands the importance of the customer and always presents himself and the business in a good light. He’s learning other parts of the business at a rapid rate and is eager to progress.”

Reacting to the news of his win, Hunt commented: “I’m honoured to receive the BSIA’s Apprentice Installer Award. It means a lot to be recognised for the hard work I’ve been doing while completing my apprenticeship with Kings Security. The scheme has been amazing in helping me to develop my practical skills and knowledge within the security sector, allowing me to ultimately develop my long-term career goal of working within the industry. I must say a big Thank You to Kings and in particular to my mentor, Andy Wood, who has helped me along the way with not only my practical skills but also theory and customer service skills. I now hope to serve as a role model for new recruits.”

James Kelly, CEO of the BSIA, added: “We’re all very well aware that in today’s challenging job market many young people may feel that a long term career is out of their reach. As such, the BSIA and its members fully support the development of apprenticeships which offer positions to young people who wish to gain practical skills and knowledge in the security industry, in turn allowing them to ultimately develop longer term careers in the sector.”

Kelly continued: “It’s always a pleasure to be able to recognise the outstanding talent displayed by our young apprentices, and I would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners on their achievements. They’ve all exhibited exceptional qualities throughout their apprenticeships, and no doubt have very bright futures within our industry.”

UNION tackles unauthorised key duplication in healthcare facilities thanks to keyULTRA solution

UNION – part of ASSA Abloy Security Solutions (a division of ASSA Abloy UK) – is tackling unauthorised key duplication in healthcare facilities with its keyULTRA master key system. 

Last year alone, NHS departments reported 498 data breaches to the Information Commissioner’s Office, in turn showing how data protection has become an increasing concern within hospitals.

Facilities and security managers in healthcare establishments need to safeguard confidential information and expensive medical equipment. On that basis, managing security and access control requirements are critical.

The keyULTRA master key cylinders possess one of the longest patents in the market, expiring in 2028. DuraPIN technology protects both the key and cylinder assembly from illegal duplication and permits access to authorised personnel only.

This system has successfully been installed in a number of healthcare facilities including Arnold Lodge, a medium secure psychiatric unit in Leicester, and Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham.

Craig Birch, category manager for cylinders at ASSA Abloy UK, said: “Unauthorised copies of keys and an unknown number of keys distributed to people, both within and outside organisations, are common problems for hospitals with large numbers of personnel and a high staff turnover. A copied or a lost key is an immediate security threat that could lead to data breaches and costly civil monetary penalties. That helps to eliminate the costly problems that could occur from compromised security.”

Tyco Fire and Integrated Solutions delivers the goods for retailer Matalan’s Corby Distribution Centre

Retailer Matalan is rapidly expanding and, following the installation of a new six-storey hanging garment racking system at its Corby Distribution Centre, the company called upon Tyco Fire and Integrated Solutions’ expertise in advising on the fire extinguisher and signage strategy. Subsequently, Tyco’s innovative use of photoluminescent, floor-mounted signs has absolutely ensured that a clear escape route is identified for Matalan’s staff in the event of an emergency.

Matalan is, of course, one of the UK’s leading clothing and homeware retailers, offering quality goods at up to half the equivalent High Street price. The business trades from five million square feet in over 200 stores, with several national Distribution Centres key to its successful operation.

Last year alone, over £1 billion worth of stock passed through these Distribution Centres, including over 14.5 million boxed and hanging garments through Kirkby ‘Galaxy’ DC, Lancashire, nearly six million by way of Corby in Northamptonshire and 4.5 million through Knowsley on Merseyside.

A necessary revamp of the Corby Distribution Centre has seen the old multi-storage facility, complete with mechanical crane, given over to a hanging garment despatch system over six storeys, all made possible by the addition of five mezzanine floors in the existing warehouse.

With racks of clothing making the usual high level fire safety signage unsuitable, Tyco Fire and Integrated Solutions was called in to deliver an effective solution. As part of an £8,000 supply and install contract, Tyco devised and instigated an ingenious strategy.

“We opted for high quality photoluminescent signs on the floor,” explained Nick Scrafton, service sales consultant at Tyco. “These are AAA-rated, giving a high light output of 25 lux. They’re also very durable. They come with a two-year manufacturer’s guarantee but we expect them to be good for at least five years.”

Matalan is very happy with the end result. “We tested the solution in a darkened room and the signs showed up remarkably well,” commented Tony Hales, safety advisor at Matalan. “Tyco has been innovative and open to suggestions. We’re very pleased with the solution.”

Tyco also developed a location strategy for the 120 fire extinguishers installed during the refurbishment of the Distribution Centre. “You cannot just place the extinguishers around the edge of the warehouse because of the mezzanine floors,” explained Nick Scrafton. “We deliberated on where they should go, looking at all locations, and came up with a backboard system for mounting the extinguishers with the boards painted red to make them highly visible and numbered.”

This latest installation continues Tyco’s long-standing relationship with Matalan.

PEL Services takes care of specialist fire safety and security solutions for Debenhams

PEL Services has just completed the design, supply and installation of a package of key safety systems for a further Debenhams store. As is the case at numerous other Debenhams stores around the UK, the new retail outlet in North Lincolnshire Shopping Park, Scunthorpe has been fitted with fire detection, security and Public Address systems.

The new store, which occupies 40,000 sq ft across two floors, is protected by a comprehensive store-wide ‘open protocol’ fire detection system as well as PEL’s Refuge Call, which allows a disabled person to alert Central Station operators to their predicament, in turn enabling the appropriate action to be taken.

A PA system has also been fitted by PEL Services’ engineers. This is used for safety and general announcements and to broadcast in-store radio and advertisements under a company-wide MEDIAinSTORE contract.

Security is a key consideration for the retailer. To this end, PEL Services has installed access control, intruder alarm and video-based door entry systems as part of the overall store security requirements.

For PEL Services, the real challenge at this site was the quick turnaround. Managing director Ken Faulks stated: “PEL Services has developed an excellent working relationship with Debenhams over the years. We serve the retailer with a quality package of cost-effective systems and provide a level of support to match. We also have the resources and the expert team to enable us to provide this level of service. Debenhams recognises as such through its continued use of our services across its stores, including our MEDIAinSTORE music in-store radio and advertising service which is now distributed throughout the Debenhams estate.”

PEL Services was recently responsible for the successful design, supply and installation of a Bose professional digital sound and PA system at Debenhams’ flagship Oxford Street store as part of an extensive £25 million refurbishment. The sound system features 650 ceiling speakers, making it one of the largest Bose ceiling speaker installations in Europe.
