Advent IM welcomes James Morris MP for cyber security skills gap discussions

Midlands-based cyber and information security consultancy Advent IM and members of the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster have enjoyed some serious discussions with James Morris (the MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis) around how to bridge the current cyber security skills gap.

Advent IM welcomed the MP to its head office and training centre on 20 February. During the visit, Morris met with members of the team in addition to the company’s directors, Julia McCarron and Mike Gillespie, who highlighted the ongoing cyber security skills gap that the UK is experiencing.

The MP acknowledged this as a topic he himself is extremely keen to address with the local college and that he’s also keen to be a part of the solution to entry level skill building and a career path for young people interested in joining the cyber security sector.

Last year, Mike Gillespie joined Cyber Skills Challenge UK’s CEO Stephanie Daman on BBC Radio 4 to discuss this topic, and takes every opportunity to raise awareness of the threat that a continuing gulf between UK security needs and the number of available professionals actively forms.

“The youngsters growing up now are using technology in an ever-increasing array of ways,” stated Gillespie. “The Internet of Things connects people with their information in an unprecedented manner. It’s vital we engage the upcoming generation such that they’re interested in cyber security, not only as a career path towards being a security professional, which is what UK plc really needs, but also because security is becoming part of all employees’ lives. Their role in organisational security is increasingly acknowledged.”

Gillespie went on to tell Risk UK: “We cannot afford to allow our approach to security to remain static. Threats and risks to business proliferate in a dynamic landscape and we need to develop our talent to deal with that landscape in the same evolved and proactive way. Bringing young people into security via apprenticeships and helping them to develop down this route is going to form a vital part of safeguarding UK plc in the years to come.”

Advent IM is keen to explore options for bridging the skills gap in the local community. To this end, the company will be supporting James Morris MP in addressing the challenge of developing education and training programmes that will enable local youngsters to actively become the cyber security experts of the future.

Samsung Techwin increases flexibility of iPolis Mobile app

The iPolis Mobile for Android and Apple iOS devices has been upgraded and can now support playback directly from SD cards inserted within Samsung Techwin cameras.

The added flexibility offered by this enhancement to the iPolis Mobile app is likely to be of particular interest to those end users who wish to remotely retrieve recorded video of specific incidents captured by a small number of cameras installed in their working environment as it negates the need for a DVR or NVR to record and store the video.

Diebold launches “revolutionary” ActivEdge anti-card skimming technology

Representing global losses in excess of a billion Euros, card skimming remains the most prevalent type of ATM crime and a major concern for financial institutions at risk of losing customers’ confidence due to the constant threat of cardholder identity theft and card losses.

Continuously working on new solutions to counter these risks, Diebold has announced the launch of Diebold ActivEdge, the first complete anti-skimming card reader that prevents all known forms of skimming in addition to other forms of ATM fraud.

ActivEdge counteracts skimming technology that currently relies on an ability to read the magnetic stripe of an ATM card in the short edge orientation by altering the way in which the card is inserted and read.

A shift of 90 degrees is all it takes. ActivEdge requires card users to insert their cards long-edge, making it impossible for skimmers to capture the card’s information.

Safety at the ATM is a major concern for consumers and Diebold’s end user survey conducted in Europe, North America and Latin America showed that 95% of consumers preferred the ActivEdge card reader over current card readers while they didn’t mind changing their card insertion behaviour in return for safer and more secure transactions.

Consumers inserted their card correctly on the first attempt or were able to quickly determine the proper way to insert the card.

Prevention of attacks from every vector

“Skimming devices have become more sophisticated,” explained Bassem Bouzid, senior vice-president and managing director for Diebold EMEA. “It was crucial to find an innovative solution to stop this type of fraud which, today, represents the majority of overall ATM-related fraud and also restore consumers’ confidence in ATM transactions.”

Bouzid added: “The ActivEdge card reader is the greatest weapon in the fight against card fraud and will enable financial institutions to guarantee their consumers highly secure ATM transactions.”

Diebold’s technology provides an effective security solution that prevents attacks from every vector. ActivEdge’s encrypting read head prevents criminal modifications to the card reader while the encrypted communication to the ATM’s central processing unit eliminates the ability to fraudulently capture and track card data.

In addition, each reader is paired with a specific ATM, in turn precluding the installation of fraudulent readers.

To counteract card trapping and fishing attacks, ActivEdge features automatic gate-locking functionality to prevent fraudsters from freeing trapped cards.
